My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SUGAR BABY is a 9 year old spayed chocolate female Lab who weighs 67 pounds and needs to gain a few pounds. She lived in the country and has had limited exposure to city noises, traffic, and groups of people. Sugar Baby is a quiet girl who likes to say hello to you. She walks well on the leash and must go to a home with another dog. Sugar Baby is one of four chained dogs that came to Lab Rescue when previous owner "couldn't take care of them anymore." Her buddies are Mellow Cup, Sunshine, and Hershey. They were all used as backyard breeders. Sugar Baby is approved for kids aged 10+.

Update (2/10): Sugar Baby continues to be a dream foster! She loves her people and the other dogs. She loves toys and is a very congenial and easy house guest! She is a stellar rider and is good on leash. How can you resist this sweet lump of sugar???

Update (1/30): How can ANYONE resist this face? From Sugar Baby: I be SugarBabe, a 9 years young choco drop, who loves to snuggle, kiss, play with toys, and who has the most delightful ‘wance’- that’s ‘waddle’ and ‘prance’ for you novices. Every workday, my foster sister, Coco and I walk FM to the gate for work and every afternoon, we find our way to the front of the crowd to greet her when she gets home. I love to cuddle- and am very quiet and still while I do- and if you don’t sit down right away, I’ll just lay on the nearest piece of furniture and give you the cow eyes. I am fully assimilated into the herd here and am also cat approved; I really haven’t been around children so we’ll stick with 10 years and up for that

Update (01/04): From Sugar Baby herself! "What I am looking for in a home is just someone who will love me for me; enjoy snuggling on the sofa and giving me tummy scratches when I need them (all the time). I’d like carpeting since I’m not real sure-footed- after my nail trim, I am still figuring out how to use my front feet and my ample girth doesn’t help. I’d like toys- lots of toys: balls, chewing toys and soft toys to carry around and throw. I’d like someone to take me on walks to build up my muscles and help me lose weight, although I do pull some so I can smell everything three times. I’d enjoy another dog to play with; I like to share my toys with other dogs and try to scare up a good game of tug-of-war. A fenced yard would be nice so I can go out and sniff by myself. I am learning how to be a dog again and loving it!

Update (12/29): Sugar Baby has done well with the resident cats so she is definitely good with cats! She also gets along great with the four resident dogs. Sugar Babe accepted the crate completely and has no issues while she's in there. Sugar Baby is trying to please and learning quickly.

UPdate (12/17): I am quiet and gentle and love to have my ample girth scratched; I learned that the foster parents really like my kisses too. I only had one accident the first day and haven’t had one since- Foster Mom said I am a potty-trained All Star! The foster parents are working on my weight- which I think is just fine- and trying to get me in prime condition for some dental work. I really like playing with balls (d’uh!) and squeaky toys and foster mom said I have the most glorious waddle when I retrieve. The first thing I did when I got here was go fishing on the pool cover with my cone on, so they quickly switched me to a donut. I am really loving living inside- we each have a big warm comfy bed.

Update (12/16): Sugar Baby is loving the toys and balls, although she needs a little encouragement to return the ball to you. Her impish side is already starting to appear! Once she is able to resume normal activity, we’ll be playing fetch a lot to get her weight down to where it should be. She needs work on the leash and needs to be restrained in the car since she insists on driving. After so many years outside she also needs a quick course on housebreaking, but she's doing great on that. Sunshine and Sugar Baby get along well together but are not bonded. We can say, without reservation, that they are true sweethearts!
