My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

DOB December 13, 2012

Nelly was one of 50 cats rescued from a hoarding situation in Quebec by Humane Society International. These cats were found in deplorable conditions, being denied the most basic care and many were visibly sick upon rescue. After being rescued they spent their next year being rehabilitated in an emergency shelter until they were brought to Toronto Cat Rescue foster homes.

When Nelly first arrived in her foster home she was very shy and spent much of her time hiding. Since then she has become a completely different cat. She has really bonded with her foster Mom and follows her around the house to get her attention. One of her favorite spots is cuddling on the couch beside either her foster Mom or the resident cats, but she can also be found sitting on top of the heater vent enjoying the heat. Every morning she jumps up on the bed to say hello and flops over for belly rubs. More than anything she loves other cats. She greets them constantly throughout the day by rubbing her head against them. They love to play together and especially enjoy chasing each other around the house. She’s very playful and will chase after little toy mice or crinkle balls when you throw them. Her favorite toy is a wand tail toy. She holds the tail part in her mouth and drags it all over the house. Every evening she appears in the kitchen when she knows it’s getting close to her wet food meal time. She eats dry food throughout the day but wet food is a big treat for her. She’s very quiet and rarely makes a sound but when she hears the tin open she gives a couple of excited little meows.

Nelly is not on any medication and has no special needs but her right eye has been persistently weeping from the time she was in the emergency shelter; this may be a result of stress, and her foster home is closely monitoring the situation.

Nelly’s ideal home would be in a less active environment without dogs or children and with at least one friendly, playful, non-territorial cat friend. She feels most comfortable when her foster Mom is the only person at home. Her foster Dad is working on gaining her trust but she is still very nervous around him. She will eat from his hand and play with him when he’s swishing her tail toy around but when he attempts to pet her she’ll often appear startled and run a few feet away from him.

Nelly is a happy, passionate little love bug and a pleasure to have around. She has never displayed any aggression towards people or the other cats in the household. She’s a favourite cat of her foster Mom and will be missed when she leaves for her forever home.
