My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sam is that amazing one in a million dog, who needs a one in a million owner as a full throttle companion! He is a dog of action, seeking a human of action for lifelong frollicking, rollicking fun. One and a half years old, Sam is at that awkward, adolescent stage where he will not be ignored! He's not the kind of dog who will settle down into a complacent, couch potato lifestyle.

Sam came to us in rough shape, as a city stray, malnourished and dreadfully underweight at 51 pounds. He did not do well in the high kill Animal Control shelter, where he became depressed and wildly sought out loving human touch at every opportunity. Shelter staff and volunteers raved about Sam's friendly nature, but he was excluded from the adoption program due to his physical condition, which had detioriated during his time on the road.

We invited Sam into our rescue and immediately began him on a nutritional makeover program, and treated him for rampant flea dermatitis. Our vet conducted a bevy of tests to rule out any underlying conditions. We were thrilled to learn that Sam's bloodwork was within normal range, except for a few values related to his obvious malnutrition.

Sam has blossomed beautifully, and is up to a healthy weight of 68 pounds; he could stand to gain an additional five or ten, through nutritious diet and exercise. His skin issues have resolved completely, and were related to damage done by a whopper of a flea infestation. His coat is now a thick, lustrous black and brown. Sam has the stature and coloring of a European German Shepherd, with his predominantly black facial markings and sloped hind quarters.

We have done quite a bit of work on Sam's obedience and manners. He has been evaluated and worked by a host of professional behavior experts and trainers, and he has shown tremendous potential. We have begun Sam on the Canine Good Citizenship program, and he's almost ready to ace that exam!

Sam needs an active single, couple or family with older, dog savvy kids, who will pick up the end of his leash, and bring Sam along to the next level of his development. Everybody has to be on the same page about, and be willing to participate in, his exercise and training regimen. And, Sam should be part of the action, not relegated to the sidelines. If given the focus and attention he needs, Sam will become the bright shining star of his family's home life.

Sam has been thoroughly vetted, is in great health and has been cleared for adoption. He is neutered, and has been vaccinated for rabies, lyme, canine flu, DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza), and has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped. If you are interested in Sam, please write to
