My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Keiba, which is a Hawaiian word meaning 'sunrise.' My foster mom figured it was a good choice of moniker since I came into the rescue just in time for New Years.

I'm a sweet pint-sized pittie with lots of love in my heart. At just under 35 lbs, I love warm, inviting laps and will take any opportunity to snuggle with you. Just the other day, my foster mom introduced me to her mom and I jumped right up into her rocking chair to snuggle...it was wonderful ;)

Right now, I am really enjoying indoor comforts. A warm bed, full meals, and a cuddle buddy are a significant improvement from the situation I was rescued from. Someone left me tied up outside in the cold and based on wounds on my head, animal control suspects that I may have been used as a bait dog. Baiting is a horrific form of abuse perpetrated by dog fighters in which a smaller, more submissive dog is restrained and used as a target for a larger, fighting dog to "practice" on. It is not unusual for bait dogs to be severely injured and/or killed the course of these proceedings.

Needless to say, I'm lucky that Broken Tail Rescue found me, pulled me from the animal control shelter, and brought me into foster care. Despite such a rocky start, my sunny personality continues to shine. I guess you could say I am an eternal optimist. I know that my perfect family is out there and we'll find each other soon!

At just 1 year old, I'm still working on my basic obedience skills but I aim to please (particularly if you have a tasty treat for me). I have been learning the ins and outs of potty training and my foster mom says I'm a quick study! With only a week of training, I now stand by the door to let you know when I need to go. I am also a good sport about my crate. I might resist going in initially but once inside, I'll settle down and quietly await your return. Once you're home, I'll bounce for joy! Literally, I think I might have springs in my legs :) Sometimes too much excitement can make me mouthy so it would probably be best if I went to a home without young kids but additional training and plenty of exercise will help to calm these behaviors.

Right now, other dogs can be an overwhelming experience since I am not sure if they want to love me or hurt me. This nervousness is likely the result of past mistreatment and is something that I'd like to work on. My foster mom thinks quality training would not only help me to hone my manners but also give me a sense of confidence, control, and security around other dogs.

All in all, I am an adorable little girl looking for someone to love and protect me. In return, I promise endless adoration, kisses, and cuddles!

Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.Keiba
