Red is the color most commonly associated with love, followed at a great distance by pink. It the symbolic color of the heart and the red rose, is closely associated with romantic love or courtly love and St. Valentine's Day. Big Red knows all about what his namesake color represents, offering his love to any visitor in the form of wagging tail, adoring eyes, and happy dances around your feet, and for the lucky few that give him the chance, lots of puppy kisses. Big Red (big because of his shining personality, not necessarily his size) is about 3.5 years old, neuter to be done before adoption, UTD on shots, and ready to dance circles around his future family in thanks for your love and care. Big Red is available at Second Chance Shelter in Boaz for adoption for $40. He let us know he doesn't expect a red carpet to stroll down upon adoption, but promises it will truly be a red letter day for him. (Oh and he'll root for whichever college football team you want, you know...Cornell Big Red, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Harvard Crimson, and Stanford Cardinal).

About Second Chance Shelter

About Our Shelter...

My name is Wanda McGee, and my husband, Doug, and I started the Second Chance Shelter in May of 2008. He was a police officer in Albertville, AL and they were euthanizing over 130 healthy dogs a month just in this small town. We had to do something! We are a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. We operate mainly off of private donations. However, if we receive a dog from Albertville City or Marshall County animal control, we receive $60.00 per dog, which pretty much covers the cost of spaying/neutering that dog.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our address is 130 County Road 398, Boaz AL. Our operating hours are 9-4 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. 9-2 on Saturday, and closed on Sunday and Wednesday. We do lots of off- site adoption events when the weather permits. Check out our facebook page at

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption fee is $40.00. We have a detailed adoption application, we do not adopt out dogs that have not been spayed or neutered, and we do not allow dogs adopted from the shelter to be placed on permanent chains.
