My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CHARLIE

13-14 year old neutered male

We have had 20+ young fosters come and go through our house, but very few have left a lasting impression like Charlie has. Charlie is the first senior to come into our house and we have learned more from him then all the others combined.

As I went down to pick Charlie up from the Norfolk SPCA, where he had been found as a stray, I had no idea what sad shape this guy was in. Charlie is completely deaf due to untreated ear infections. Luckily, he is not in pain from it and he has learned to use his sense of smell when it’s time for dinner. He also had a large mass removed while he was neutered. The vets concluded that the mass was causing him to have severe hair loss, along with being flea infested for a very long period of time. Although his hair is coming back in some, there are areas where it’s taking much longer due to the scar tissue formed from years of scratching. Charlie currently takes Rimadyl and glucosamine to help with his mobility. He gets around pretty well for his age and still gets excited when we come home from work. Charlie is able to climb the hardwood steps each night when we go to bed. A house with several steps to get outside would not be ideal since we limit him to the steps only 1-2 times a day.

Charlie has become an active part of our family. When he first came into our home months ago, he would lay off to the side and would rarely seek human attention. Now we find him laying his head on our laps, giving us his paw, following us from room to room and somehow slithering his way up on the couch and “playing dead” when he sees us motioning for him to get down. Charlie is amazing with our 10-month-old daughter, our 3 dogs and is such a gentleman when we have visitors.

Every foster takes a little piece of my heart with them when they leave, but Charlie
will definitely take the biggest piece. We can all learn a thing or two from a senior dog, especially those who haven’t experienced love their entire life. Here are just a few things that Charlie lives by each and everyday:

1. Forgive and forget

2. Enjoy the simple things in life

3. Be grateful for what you do have

4. Take a nap anytime you get a chance

5. Surround yourself with the ones who love you, and don’t let them get too far

If you are looking for a well-behaved senior guy, then Charlie will not disappoint you.

Meet him once and he will steal your heart, just like he did ours.
