My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Snickers - Jack Russel Terrier (“Pudding”) - adult - 6 years of age - male/neutered - 11 1/2 pounds - brown and white smooth coat

With his searching, liquid brown eyes, intent and full eye contact, and hopeful, open expression, Snickers wins hearts everywhere he goes. In fact, his foster family has been so besotted by him that they have struggled with a desire to adopt him themselves, but they believe that he would be happier in a household without other dogs.

This is not to say that Snickers is unable to get along with other dogs - he was so grateful to join a real household after months in a kennel at Animal Control, that he strove very earnestly to get along with others. That effort on his part endeared him even more to his foster family - while he struggled to be part of a household with 3 dogs and cats, it became clearer and clearer to his foster care providers that every fiber of Snickers’ being quivered to be an only dog.

And Snickers is definitely the complete package in a dog. He is responsive, communicative, and incredibly intelligent. He is extremely tactile, loves to snuggle and burrow under the covers at night. HIs house manners are impeccable, and he is an exceptional companion - he loves to be part of any outing, walk on lead, and meet new people. He is capable of bonding profoundly.

Hedgesville Hounds extends its own sincere thanks to the Animal Control officers who recognized what a champion dog Snickers is, and sought rescue help for him when it became all too obvious that Snickers’ former human was not ever returning to pick him up. Snickers was a passenger in a car that was part of a drunk driving accident, (Snickers was not driving), and he was taken into Animal Control for safe keeping. Snickers was not injured in the accident. The officers, and Snickers, had waited patiently for over 3 months to reunite Snickers with his human.

Snickers’ foster care providers have been touched by how eagerly Snickers embraced being part of a household - and they also observed that Snickers seems to feel that he needs to be noticed and remembered, despite their efforts to reassure him. There are times when he almost seems to act as if he needs to be the self-appointed household caregiver - especially at meal times, when his determination to campaign for food causes him to be stressed and worried. He reminds his caregivers of a young child who has been asked to assume responsibility for his siblings for an extended period, and can’t fully trust that an adult will ever be entirely capable of assuming that role. These are the times when Snickers begins grumbling and growling at the other dogs, who, fortunately, respond to him patiently and with commendable forbearance.

This is not to say that Snickers is high strung, nor is he nervous. He is a very reasonable dog who is welcomed into shops and even restaurants. We suspect Snickers is quite aware that between his small, very handsome and compact shape, and his beguiling way of sitting up and looking fully and deeply into peoples’ eyes, that he exerts powers of charm and irresistibility. He meets other leashed dogs on sidewalks with friendly, jaunty calmness and tail wagging. Remarkably, he loves to ride in the car, and he settles into his seat joyfully and contentedly, which has given his foster parents the great pleasure of bringing him to meetings and along with them on quick errands.

The issue for Snickers seems to be one of believing and trusting that someone is in control of the schedule, the situation, and the order of the household. In that respect he is like a tiny Hercule Poirot - he loves order, and method.

Snickers will offer his committed adopter(s) the heart and soul of a great and valiant dog in a very small package. It is our own heartfelt desire to see this wonderful and sensitive dog go to a home in which he can relax utterly, secure in the knowledge that he will never be lost in the shuffle, will never go without eating, and will never be forgotten again.

Snickers is in excellent health, neutered and up to date on vaccines and preventives. We do not recommend Snickers for a home with small children.
