My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kia is a darling and really a puppy at heart. Her main focus is the people in her life, much preferring their company to any toy or treat. She is a very sweet girl who is well behaved and very affectionate with everyone. If you let her, she would love to sit in your lap but if not, she will sit beside you as close as can be. She also loves to snuggle and will tuck her little face into your neck in such an endearing and loving way it just melts your heart. Kia is approximately 4 years old and currently weighs 40 lbs.

Here is what else her foster family had to say:

Kia really wants to be your baby. She just loves to be with you doing whatever you want to do. We would say she has a low to moderate level of activity as she does require at least one good walk a day - we do a longer morning walk and then another one after work - but she would go for more if you have time! When home, Kia likes to snuggle and is perfectly content laying next to you or at your feet. She has one tooth that is just a bit further out than her other front teeth which her lip sometimes gets caught on giving her an adorable and crooked smile at times. She is a little hesitant with new men but doesn't particularly avoid them or cower, she just likes to keep an extra eye on them until she is sure they are a friend.

Kia hasn't met children but has shown no socialization concerns. She can be a bit hesitant around males when she first meets them, but hasn't had any issues with developing relationships with anyone she's met regardless of age or gender. Quite the contrary, she wants to introduce herself to everyone we meet on our walks! She will sometimes growl quietly to herself when she hears people outside the apartment or loud noises outside but this is very infrequent. She did initially growl at my partner (male) when he first arrived home but stopped once she saw that I knew him and he was ok. Otherwise, she is a pretty passive pup showing no concerns with poking or prodding even during play. She has no issues with food or toys so its fine to reach your hand right in there if necessary. She does sometimes nip at your feet or bark when she gets really worked up playing but will stop as soon as she's told no and hasn't exhibited these behaviours outside of play time. Kia has never interacted with other pets directly but is exposed to many animals on our walks in the neighbourhood and is always excited and curious about them. She never barks but she does pull a bit more when she sees other dogs on walks.

Kia hasn't barked at all besides during play. I have heard her whining once when I was arriving home and she had been crated for the work day but she stopped as soon as she heard my voice. Kia definitely likes to have her people around and notices when one is missing but hasn't shown any separation anxiety in general or with a particular person. Kia is not destructive at all, she likes to sniff things but hasn't tried to chew on anything in our home. She isn't fond of loud vehicles but is typically fine during walks. Her favourite thing to do is snuggle. She wants all of your attention if she can get it, otherwise she will snuggle up right beside you or at your feet. She loves to play fetch (in the home or outside) and tug of war with her snowman and enjoys going for walks around the neighbourhood to meet new people.

Kia is wonderful with food! We eat on our couch and not only will she not beg but she will lie beside you as if you weren't eating anything! She definitely likes to sniff everything you are making and is curious, but she won't put her snout anywhere near your plate and is content to just continue laying beside you. She has put her paws on the counter once when she smelled lasagna, but was quickly corrected and hasn't done it since. She is a smart pup who learns very quickly. She currently knows sit, stay, come, crate, down, off, up, and paw - albeit some more consistently than others. She is a people pleaser and will definitely want to make her people happy by following commands, but she does get excited and have some difficulty with them when she is distracted (eg. when she is at the door before a walk or if a new person enters the room). She is well on her way to being house trained. She has only had a couple accidents in the home and they were at night or in her crate. She hasn't quite got a food/potty schedule down yet so this is to be expected and we foresee no concerns with this moving forward. Kia is crate trained but it is used inconsistently. She is crated during the day if we are both at work (approx. 8 hours) but if we will be gone for shorter periods of time we allow her to roam the apartment as she is not destructive at all. She isn't particularly happy about being in her crate but she doesn't howl or cry and only makes noises if she has been in there at night and needs to go out. We had initially crated her at night time, but as she is not destructive we have allowed her to keep her crate door open at night and she continues to sleep there regardless. She is a great girl who won't jump on the bed in the morning until someone has gotten up - even if she isn't crated! Although she loves her morning snuggles and may jump in after she knows you are awake.

We would say Kia is leash trained. She does pull a bit - more so if there is another animal nearby or a particularly nice smelling tree/post - but in general she is good on her leash and I have no trouble walking her even at 40 pounds. Kia is a curious pup. She tries to get out of the door when she knows we are going out for a walk so we have been working on her sitting and staying while we open the door to prevent this. She gets very excited when she is about to go out so she has some difficulty with this. If she did get out, I don't imagine she would go far as she really wants the attention of her person and would probably come back to check where you were and why you hadn't followed her. Kia is not fond of car rides. She travels in them a couple times a week (short distances) and will pace in the back seat and sometimes whine.

Kia is a loveable pup who wants to share her love with the people in her life. She is very affectionate and willing to relax on the couch or go for a run - whatever you are doing! She would do well with a home that can give her the attention and affection she needs. She would love a backyard or a home where she could run around a bit and play with her people or other furry friends!

If you think Kia would be a good choice for your family, please submit an application for consideration.
