My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update Bio 02/01/2015: Abbie is an 11 year old, 11 pound (new age and weight) blind, senior Yorkie, that came from a very neglectful situation. She was one of 30 dogs living in a home with an animal hoarder. She and her pals were all impounded by the county animal shelter, and she was lucky enough to be rescued by UYR, otherwise she would have been euthanized for sure. She is being fostered in West Palm Beach.

She came in very matted and in very poor condition. However, after a bath, haircut, multiple visits to the vet, she now has fresh breath and looks much better. She is overweight, and should lose at least 2 or 3 lbs to be at a healthier weight, so is now on a strict diet. She is also completely blind. Due to the long term neglect and inflammation in her eyes which was never treated, she has a condition called Phthisis bulbi, which is a shrunken eye. Her left eye is almost complete shrunken, and her right eye is slowly shrinking. She also has fluid behind her eyes, which causes them to have a blueish look to them. There is nothing to be done about this condition. The condition is not painful, but one does have to make sure she does not get a corneal ulcer in her eye. Luckily, the pressure in her eye is normal, as is her tear production.

We are not really sure how old Abbie is, due to the long term neglect, she probably acts older than she is. She gets around slowly, and does bump into objects on her way, but it doesn't see to bother her. She is still affectionate, and knows where the kitchen is, and has been able to climb the doggie stairs up the couch and sleeps on the back of the pillows. She has been pretty quiet, but she does want to be in the same room near her person, and if I am upstairs, and she is downstairs, she will start barking. She does not sleep on the bed, but would very much like to, like any dog, she jumps on the bed to get on it. She does settle down after a bit and sleep in her own bed.

Abbie gets along great with the other dogs and cats, but she is not a pushover. She probably had to protect herself living with 29 other dogs, so if a dog starts snapping in her face, she will protect herself, but with no teeth left, there is not much she can do. Abbie does appear to be house trained. She does currently need to be picked up and put on the grass, but once she is there, she does her business, however, like any dog, if she is not let out often enough, she will have an accident.

Abbie is just looking for a place to lay her head and retire in. She is low maintenance and would make a great companion for a senior. She can go with other dogs and cats, but if there are larger dogs, they need to be respectful. She deserves to have love and be treated kindly and with care her last years and she has a very reasonable adoption fee. Could this home be yours?

Initial Bio 01/25/2015

Meet Abbie! Abbie is a 13 lb, 8 (estimated) year old Yorkie female who is being fostered in West Palm Beach FL. Abbie came to UYR from a hoarding situation and was rescued along with many other dogs living in squalor that were impounded by the county animal control. United Yorkie Rescue was one of several rescue groups asked to help.

As you can see, Abbie was in bad shape. Her vision is poor, she can see shadows but is likely mostly blind we fear; however she will receive a full eye evaluation soon. Her teeth were mostly decayed and infected and much of her body was covered in scabs and she was infested with parasites but that is now resolved. She has already received a dental and several teeth have been removed. She will likely have several more removed next week. She is also somewhat overweight likely due to poor diet and will need to lose a couple of pounds to reach her optimum weight.

Yes, Abbie was in rough shape but she is in great hands now and on her way to recovery.

Abbie’s foster mom is just getting to know her. Stay tuned for updates !
