My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Come Meet Me! - Sunday, Feb 8th from 12pm - 3pm at Pet Valu, Ancaster

Chris appears to be a purebred Dandie Dinmont Terrier and has all the characteristics of the breed. He is sweet and loving, intelligent, happy-go-lucky and loves to play chase. Although fine in an apartment, Chris would appreciate a backyard to run around in where he can chase squirrels and such. He is fine with children but would do best with older children that would enjoy tossing a ball around for him. Chris loves people in general and likes to be wherever you are. He is good at amusing himself with toys however and can be left for a normal working day with no issues. Chris is approximately 2 - 3 years old and currently weighs 24 lbs.

Here is what his foster family had to say:

Chris is a sweet boy, gentle, loyal and very loving. He likes to be wherever his people are and will become your little shadow. He is very affectionate and loves to give kisses to everyone. He is past the puppy stage but still has lots of energy to have fun. Although his energy is low when in the home, and is definitely not a hyper dog, he does have lots of energy when playing ball, or when running around the backyard. He also loves to go for walks and is social and friendly with everyone he meets. He doesn't appear to shed however he will require a good brushing now and then to keep him looking his best.

Although we do have cats in the home and for the most part Chris tends to ignore them, he does like to chase them and will bark at them to get get them running and then the chase is on. He would probably be best in a home without cats and rather keep his chasing for the squirrels in the yard. Chris is not a barker per se but he does like to talk and has a lot of different vocalizations. If I am eating a snack he will bark at me as if he is asking me to share it with him and yet, when we are eating meals at the table he never bothers us. If he is lying on my bed and I move away after petting him, he will bark (talk) and growl and act silly to try to get me to come back. He really talks a lot! Generally he doesn't bark in the home unless he is trying to tell you something, like he is unable to reach his ball, or the doorbell rings or he is playing with you. He is actually a great little guard dog as he will bark when strangers come to the door and his bark is big and makes him sound like a much larger dog. Chris is not a shy dog however and he welcomes everyone into the house when he realizes they are okay, and he will greet people with kisses.

Chris’ manners are great. He hasn’t stolen food from anyone or chewed anything in the house except for some of my sons play balls. He will sit for you and beg for food and will sometimes lay down. He’s a little confused on his commands but his begging is quite adorable when he reaches up with his two fluffy paws. He’ll drop something (item he shouldn’t have) eventually but is hesitant or stubborn unless you are very firm with him. Chris is fully house trained. He’ll scratch at the door lightly when he wants to go out and will bark at the door when ready to come in. Chris is wonderful to walk on a leash. He doesn’t pull or bark at other dogs. He is eager to meet his other canine friends but won’t bark at them unless he’s uncomfortable or thinks they’ll play. He doesn’t bolt out the door. He will stay for you but you have to remind him each time. Chris rides really well in the van. He will go from front to back and try to get in the highest location so that he can look out the window. He may try to get in your lap while driving.

Chris is fine to be left on his own and can amuse himself with his toys and chewy things while you are away. He does seem to be a protective of his bones and will growl if you try to take them away from him so very young children that didn't understand to leave him alone at these times may not be best. We never crated Chris at any time as there didn't appear to be any need of it as he was perfectly fine when left on his own in the home. Chris does get startled at night when we are out on walks by loud noises, garbage cans, etc. but as he gets more walks and become more socialized around these things he will do better. He loves to play ball and play with his chew toys. He’ll entertain himself and bark at the ball as it’s moving away from him. He, of course, loves it when you join in. He loves going for walks and joining you in the car.

Chris is a sweet lovable little guy who just wants to be around you all of the time. He loves to be rubbed on his upper chest, belly and hips and will curl up beside you in bed each night. If he’s not curled up behind your legs on the couch he’ll be beside you on the floor as close as he can get. When he finds his favourite person he’ll follow you everywhere from room to room and will always be there with you ….even when you get out of the shower. If you have room in your heart for Chris he’s won’t disappoint you. He’s a very sweet guy.

I would love for Chris to go to a home that has another dog as he would love to have a buddy to play with. He has a constant desire to be around you and this may help keep him company when you are not able to. He always greets you when you have left him even if only for a short period of time so leaving him by himself for hours on end would be depressing for him. A home with a backyard would be great as he loves to play ball and run about. He would be a great family pet with older children or with a couple or single person who would enjoy his company.

Chris was originally found under a group of Christmas trees hence the name "Chris". It appeared that someone had dumped him there, perhaps when they were unable to care for him any longer and hoped he would be found by someone when choosing a tree for Christmas.
