My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dudley 5 - 8 yr old male polydactyl Grey and White Bicolor Scottish Fold -maybe

May update: Look at this cool dude with his feet crossed, his green eyes so luminous ! Dudley naturally falls into wonderful poses. I especially like him like this with his chin resting on one paw that lies on another paw as he shows his outrageous polydactyl toes. He is such a great cat. He follows us around like a medium sized dog. I will get a photo of him walking. He stands high and has a long body, a long tail. He is wonderful company. And he just makes you smile all the time..

Original Post: Dudley is so adorable. The shelter called him Mittens because of his huge feet. I thought he looked sort of like a flop-eared British terrier so I named him Dudley. He does kind of look like a dog more than most cats. What a character he is!

He was very glum in the shelter. No question about that and why not? He is reviving with us, but he can’t understand why he cannot get out of his room and go anywhere he wants. Kitties from shelters have to go through a two-week quarantine in case they are incubating a cold. He seems totally healthy, no sniffles, so he will be out soon. Actually, we have already had a blood panel done on him and his values are perfect. He will have a dental on 2/11 though his teeth are really in pretty good shape. (He came with a grant to do his teeth so we are getting that done.) The vet thought he was between 5 to 8 yrs old which feels about right. He is a very solid big boy at 15 pounds.

Of course, his feet are outrageous. They may be the biggest feet on a cat I have ever seen. I haven’t counted the toes on his feet, but I he must be polydactyl with his big paddlefeet. He has wonderful feet that just make you grin.

So I need to write about his ears. They are sort of wrinkly. He could be a Scottish Fold or he could be a cat who had ear infections as a kitten and grew funny ears as a result. I had a Persian cat who had that happen and he looked just like a Persian Fold mix--so cute! But I know the Persian had no Fold in him. (He was a mistreated Persian breeder’s stud.) The same may be true for this boy; I don’t know. He has the round eyes and apple shape to his head that most Folds have.

Let me explain about Scottish Folds. A Scottish Fold MUST ideally be bred to a non Fold. So a reputable breeder never breeds two Folds together. The reason for this is that two Folds bred together genetically cause trouble and the resulting offspring have problems including very severe, crippling arthritis later in life. Most often Folds are out bred to British Shorthairs--that creates the classic look of most Folds. I have fostered Scottish Folds bred to Himalayans, to red tabby shorthairs and to other breeds. They are all wonderful no matter what they are out bred to.

This boy has the characteristics of the British Shorthairs: big round eyes, short muzzle, the thick dense coat with no undercoat, but with a definitely firm crisp pile that “breaks,“ a blunt tipped tail, ears set widely on the head with rounded tips. 15 pounds is in the normal range for these cats so he fits the description of British Shorthairs in many respects.

So what is he? Well, we will never know. He could be a Fold bred with a British Shorthair, or a British Shorthair who grew up with untreated ear troubles and now looks like Fold. Or he could be a Fold with untreated ear troubles growing up. Or a kitty of unknown breed with untreated ear troubles .……..? He has had, the vet thinks and it shows, untreated ear troubles in the past. If you are interested in this cat, I can say to you, Yes, this is a certainly a super cute boy, but if what you want is a purebreds Scottish Fold, I cannot say for sure that he is one. Just that he looks like one.

He has a big personality. He is mild and goodnatured, easy to handle, but through whatever is going on he seems dignified. Dudley looks you right in the eye. He is a character. I don’ t think I have seen him really happy yet. It will be fun to see him happy and playing.

He has recently arrived and I am still getting to know him. He seems to be cat friendly. I do believe he has had a hard life living with humans unworthy of him. He was dropped off at a shelter by his owner who asked that the shelter euthanize him. It is hard to think his life with whoever that was was a good one.

He eats wet and dry food and is litterbox perfect.

Someone will have a real one-of-a-kind new companion. I will get new, better photos soon.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
