Barney is an 9-year-old, 71-pound Labrador/Shepherd/Chow mix. This boy has a simple mission in life: to love and be loved. He's a joyful dog who adores getting attention - and then giving it right back. He has a big smile on his face for everyone he meets. He walks well on a leash and gets along famously with his foster brother and sister, Mortis and Layla, and they have great fun hanging out together. He can be picky about which other dogs he likes when out in the world though. He can be reactive to both big and small dogs when on leash, whereas other dogs he is perfectly fine with. He hasn't shown interest in toys, but he does very much like bones. Barney is overjoyed to ride in the car. When he goes outside, he immediately runs to the car hoping you're off on an adventure. He loves to stick his nose out the window and smell the air. At home, he likes to stay in the house and keep you company. When you come home from work or running an errand, Barney greets you with little yelps of 'you're back! you're back!' joy. Barney had surgery in March 2015 to remove an anal sac tumor and a lymph node. The cancer is now gone, but there's a chance it may return. Barney has been cancer free for over two years and is happy and healthy so far. Barney is a proud graduate of the UnChained Program, which matches at risk youth with shelter dogs who can benefit from training to help make them more adoptable. Check out his video! Barney came to us from Sammie's Friends Rescue in Grass Valley, where he'd been for nine months. He was passed up for adoption over and over because of his age, but he's still a vital presence with a lot of love to give.
