My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jake was a frightened little seven month old boy when his owner dumped him in a high kill animal control facility. Jake was right in his peak puppy development when he had such trauma foisted on him. He reacted with the fear and mistrust that you'd expect from a young pup, in such a chaotic unfamiliar surroundings.

Our shelter contacts figured that Jake needed some peace and quiet in a foster home, before a decision could be made about his adoption prospects. We were thrilled to welcome in him into our Rescue, and immediately, we were charmed by his plucky personality.

It was a joy to watch Jake reclaim his puppy roots, after he shook off the shelter experience. He is quite a little character with a big personality. Jake is generally a good-natured dog, and he loves to play, although sometimes, his insistent, puppy cluelessness annoys the older, "set in their ways" canine crowd. He has received his fair share of rebukes.

Jake is a very small dog, weighing just seven pounds, and is a likely mix of Chihuahua and Rat Terrier. He has the tri-color pattern of the genial Rat, as well as some of that lovable terrier tenacity. And then, Jake has the unmistakable apple shaped noggin and pointed muzzle that characterize the loveable Chihuahua. In personality, he just captures the best qualities of both breeds.

Jake would be a great choice for an active single or couple who have the time to devote to the training and exercise regimen required by an older puppy. He could also join an active family with older children, who are savvy in their handling of small dogs. Jake is quite a delicate little guy, although his bravado makes him seem like a much larger dog. We think Jake would be a total pest to cats.

Jake has good house manners, and is nearly housetrained, but adopters should expect to transition him to a new potty routine. He is nicely crate trained, so adopters will have that tool to use. Jake is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo parainfluenza, and corona). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
