My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Gertie! She is such a sweet, gentle little lady and not the typical Chihuahua (she does not mind you looking in her mouth, touching her feet, looking in her ears, etc.). She's very quiet and demure, enjoying cuddling and awkwardly playing with her foster siblings (2 other chihuahuas, a jack russell mix, and 2 cats). She likes to use her feet to swat at would be playmates. Gertie doesn't mind bigger dogs either, though. She marches up quite confidently to dogs twice her size ready to make friends. She is a petite little girl herself weighing only 6.4lbs., but she still needs to gain a little weight to get her up to a healthy size. We are guessing she's about 5 years old, which for a chihuahua is still very young since they typically live 15 years or more.

The first week in February, Gertie was abandoned outside our doggy daycare facility, in a crate in the cold with no note or anything. We took her to animal control so she could have a chance at finding a family there, but after her hold period was up and no one had come for her, we decided it was fate that she join our rescue and went back to bring her home.

Gertie is a quickly learning all of her basic obedience skills such as sit, down, wait, polite leash walking and crate training. She is a little nervous around new people but she is able to quickly adapt to new situations and wants to be held and snuggled by you in no time. We do think that due to her size, Gertie would do best in a home with older children that know how to appropriately handle smaller dogs so as not to scare her. When we took Gertie to the vet for her physical, the vet did notice a slight heart murmur which will need to be monitored, but it's not causing her any trouble at the moment. If you are interested in meeting Gertie, call Pawtropolis to set up an appointment .
