My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Elijah—the name refers to a “wonder worker” and a “helper in distress” among other distinctions in the Judeo-Christian traditions. This is indeed a boy of wonder—everything in his world, from his perspective, is wonderful and wondrous— and he is one of the most joyous dogs his foster mom has ever met, which goes a long way to calming any distress the humans around him might be feeling after a long day at work. In fact, his middle name should be JOY because he is such a happy, happy dog.

Elijah is a compact 36 lbs, 1 year-old American Bulldog mix, who is heartworm negative, crate trained, and house trained. Elijah loves humans, loves other dogs, loves his squeaky balls and his stuffed toys, loves ear rubs and belly rubs, and really, really loves food and treats (which helps make him very trainable!). He tolerates cats well (he’s very curious but gentle). Because he’s fairly strong and still puppy-like in his enthusiasm, he would probably do best in a home with children over the age of 8 or 9.

He has deep, soulful eyes and loves to plop his big head on a human’s arm or in a human’s lap and just absorb the joy of touch and connection. He likes to snuggle, but he’s also a very active boy and will need a yard to run around in and burn off some of his energy or someone who will give him good daily exercise. He can entertain himself well with a toy (or simply lying belly up in the sun) and he does very well in his crate for up to 7 hours (his foster mom hasn’t left him in it any longer than that due to her particular work schedule) or out in the yard by himself. But he really relishes companionship and is happiest when he’s hanging with his foster mom and her dog. And did we mention squeaky balls?

Elijah’s previous owners surrendered him because they didn’t have the time to invest in his training, so he needs some basic obedience work, although he’s starting to learn quickly, after just three days in his foster home, not to bolt through doors, not to jump up on people, and to sit on command. He is probably a good candidate for agility training as well. During his time at the shelter, he was used to temperament test incoming dogs, which is another indication of how big this dog’s heart is—every being, in Elijah’s book, is a friend.

But what he really wants is a friend for life and his own forever family.

All Dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and given a physical by a veterinarian prior to adoption.

Elijah is currently in foster care so, if interested, please email us today!
