Dargo was adopted from a local shelter by a young college student. However, soon afterwards, his owner did not have time for him and a Good Samaritan saw him being neglected in the backyard wanting so much to be a part of a family. He is now with Angel’s Heart Dog Rescue.

Dargo is a very cool big guy at 85 pounds and age two. We think he is an Alaskan Malamute mixed with either Husky or Samoyed. Dargo is healthy, happy, affectionate, and very people-oriented. He is loving as well as goofy. He knows some basic commands, and is getting some social skills at the rescue, but will benefit from continued structure, as well as more training, once adopted.

Dargo is a well-behaved dog in public and meets people very well. He walks well on the leash, but he can also pull, so he fares better with a prong collar for better control. He definitely benefits from the bonding and structure afforded in the structured walk. He can also be exuberant, at times. When Dargo is with another dog, it is evident that he longs to play. Though not a good match for placement with small dogs, he can meet small dogs well on leash. If Dargo is to be matched with another dog in an adoption, a dog closer to his size and also playful would be our direction.

Dargo must be an indoor/outdoor dog. He cannot be excluded to the outdoors. He must be allowed in the house to mingle and hang with the family, and he must be allowed to sleep inside the house. Dargo is a great family dog for those who love the larger dogs; however, children should be over the age of eight (8). He is a great blend of both chilling and being exuberant. He enjoys walks but does not want to be a running dog. Due to his coat, he does require some minimal grooming, mostly regular brushing and an occasional bath. He does have a very thick coat typical to his breed.

Dargo is a smart dog, who appreciates the owner/dog relationship and some form of mental stimulation on a daily basis. He is not satisfied with just hanging in a back yard or being a couch potato and watching the world go by. Though not a high energy dog, Dargo wishes to engage life. He has zeal and joy and wants to experience life to the fullest with his owner. Dargo’s best fit is with a person or people who want to DO stuff with their dog. Some examples of that would be: Going for a walk or driving to the park or beach, Dog Park, doggie playdates, participating in training, even a trip down to the local Petco or driving around doing errands. Homes with another playful dog that will actually play considerably with Dargo are a good match too; however, please note that Dargo may have his own mental stimulation needs unique to him.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Dargo is a loving and affectionate, wonderful, friendly, well-socialized and smart dog and whoever adopts him will acquire a great pet. However, some additional requirements will ensure the right match:

a) A yard is a plus with some dirt (as well as grass) as Dargo will not do his business on a walk. He will just hold it forever and seems to prefer to go on dirt.

b) A home with another dog is fine. Dargo very much enjoys other dogs, and he seems to enjoy the company of another dog if left alone when folks are away from home. But Dargo sometimes “bugs” the other dogs to play more than they wish to, so if your dog is an older dog, or a dog that really does not care to play much anymore, this could be annoying to your already existing dog. If the home does not have another dog, Dargo will need play dates with other dogs in the form of friends’ dogs, doggie daycare, or Dog Park. I do not feel that Dargo’s needs will be met with people who believe that all their dog needs is “them;” i.e., the humans. Dargo relishes in playing with other dogs. He is great in the doggie daycare setting with dogs his own size

c) An owner with some dog experience who understands that these Husky types have a bit of a stubborn streak. Though Dargo is normally very well behaved (both in and out of the home) and very responsive to instructions, he sometimes test limits and think it is play time when it is time to be serious. Dargo needs someone who will set limits and offer him some training and structure as well as companionship and security.

d) No out of state adoptions or cats in the home please.

e) If you are the type who wishes to play WITH your dog, let the game be one of skill and teaching, for example, “Sit,” throw the ball, and teach him to bring it back,” and not a game where you put yourself to equal standing to the dog, for example “tug of war.” Dargo does best when he understands that he is not equal to the humans, but that the humans are in charge.

Dargo is neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, and micro-chipped. He is crate-trained and sleeps in a 48 inch wire crate at night. If you are interested in Dargo, please contact Angels Heart Dog Rescue at adopt@angelsheartdogrescue.com. The phone number to the rescue is: 626-340-9316. There is no need to phone the rescue until you have first submitted an interest via e-mail.
