My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CHOPPER: 7 year old neutered English Purebred Black Male Lab 84 LBS

Chopper was purchased from a breeder at 9 weeks old. He has been a wonderful family dog and is used to being around people and young kids. There are four children in the house starting at 22 months, all of which adored him and would dress him, climb and wrestle with him. He is a gentle giant according to his previous owner. Unfortunately, their lifestyle changed and both adults had to work full-time leaving Chopper home alone. He does not like being home alone and has tried to escape over the fence, out the gate and even attempted to chew through a crate. He did not exhibit any of these behaviors until his family went back to work and he was alone all day five days a week. When the family was home he was your typical happy go lucky Lab as he wanted to be where the action was. Surrendering Chopper has been a very difficult decision but since they loved him so much, after much contemplating, they decided they needed to do what was best for Chopper. They called Golden Gate Lab Rescue and after a lengthy conversation they knew that Lab Rescue would find a great forever home for him.

From my Foster Mom:

Chopper has been great with our dog-savvy cats. He sometimes bugs the house cat, but our house cat is not too smart, so he teases Chopper and then wonders why he gets worked up. He is learning how to play ball. We have our own Lab and we left the dogs in the house alone for a couple of hours and all was fine. There was no evidence of separation anxiety when we returned. This was a good test for Chopper to see how he would do with another dog at home but without humans. With Chopper's unending play level with our dog, it would be good for Chopper to have a dog buddy in his new home. He has a gentle mouth for taking treats and he does not have any possessive issues with toys or food.

From my Rescue Rep:

Chopper is a wonderful boy who loves life and everything in it! He loves his walks but needs work with his leash manners. He mostly loves to go on hikes when he can roam and has good recall but should never be off leash until his recall is 100% with his new family. More than anything else he LOVES to swim. He has a history of ear infections (not uncommon with dogs who swim a lot so care must be taken to clean the ears after swimming.) Water is his favorite whether the beach, lakes, kiddie pools, ponds (fish or not) and very small puddles, he will find a way to roll in it! He has a history of having a hematoma in one ear (blood accumulating in the flap of one ear) which can occur in dogs who have ear infections. The ear infection causes irritation to the ear, resulting in shaking of the head which in turn causes the development of the hematoma. This has been treated by the vet and just needs to be observed in the event of any future ear infections. He is a sweet mellow dog at home but full of energy when he is out. He does not climb on furniture or chew inappropriate items. He's great with other dogs and never wants to stop playing. Chopper knows some commands including sit, down, come and go. One thing he doesn't like are fireworks. He sleeps through the night on his dog bed next to his Foster's bed. He is not a barker and he doesn't jump on people. His new family will be lucky to have him.

What Lab Rescue is looking for:

Because Chopper is used to having family around and is not happy being home alone we definitely want someone who is around the majority of the day. If there is a dog buddy at home, that would be a plus but this would not take place of having a human around as well. He is a big boy and thus will need someone who is physically strong enough to walk him although with training and proper leash manners that will become easier. An active household is necessary as he needs consistent daily exercise. To keep this boy happy, being around water on a regular basis would be a big plus!

Chopper is neutered, up to date on his vaccinations, heartworm negative and microchipped. He is located in Livermore.

If you have the time, meet the requirements above for this wonderful happy boy and want him to be a part of your family, please contact Sandy at 650-303-2436. Please leave good days/times to call and how late I can call in the evening.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
