My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In our Higher Conciousness, we subscribe to the Native American notion that animals are our sacred Spirit Guides, and that dogs, in particular, teach us a lot about love and loyalty. Well, our Comanche must be a very special Spirit Guide, indeed, to explain his sudden reversal of bum luck.

It seems that Comanche was travelling that not-so-sacred path toward euthanasia, in the company of dozens of dogs, on the daily hit parade in an overcrowded high kill shelter. Just one year old and his number was up; he was led toward the chamber to receive the needle. And then...the vet simply couldn't do it. Comanche had charmed himself into a stay of execution, and....one thing lead to another....and now he's taking in the Connecticut scenery with gusto.

This exhuberant American Bulldog mix is loaded with charm. We've never seen anything quite like it. Comanche is a loving, guileless soul, who adores everyone he meets. His temperment is outstanding, and he has received ideal behavior evaluations throughout his shelter stay. Comanche will be a constant joy for his experienced bully breed adopter.

American Bulldogs differ in appearance from their English Counterparts, and present with a leggy, muscular physique that exudes power, grace and confidence. Comanche is petite for breed standard, weighing just 50 pounds. He appears to have the facial characteristics of the Standard type of Bulldog: his muzzle is slightly elongated, and he is not much of a wetmouth. He has the characteristic white, short, minimally shedding coat, with a comical brown/black patch over one eye, and a pair of elaborate floppy ears that suggest some bunny rabbit in his DNA. Seriously, there might be some strain of Hound at play, to explain those pink ears that perpetually flop side to side like a fashionable spring chapeau. He seems to have a Pointer's tail that swings into action when something grabs his attention.

Comanche would be the ideal fit for a high energy single or couple, who can provide a life full of action. He is a sensitive, emotional boy, who bonds strongly with his people, and needs folks willing to do the work involved in raising an older puppy. He is a strong, exuberant dog, who may knock an unsuspecting toddler to the ground, but would revel in the raucous games of older kids. Comanche loves other dogs, but must be matched with a same size and energy housemate. He would overwhelm the delicate sensibilities of a laid back senior dog, or pipsqueak Chihuahua.

Like others of his breed, Comanche is a working dog, whose kind was originally bred to rid farms of vermin, so the need for work, or purpose, is inherent in his genes. The best way to focus this instinct is first, through vigorous exercise, and second, through structured obedience training. Comanche has begun the AKC Good Citizen program and is an outstanding student. Comanche loves to please his handlers, and is both food and praise motivated, so positive reinforcement training techniques work beautifully on him. In the hands of motivated adopters, he has the potential to become the posterboy for model breed behavior.

Comanche has great house manners, although he's probably not suited to studio apartment living. He is housetrained, although, adopters should have appropriate expectations for a recently neutered, male rescue dog, and forgive and troubleshoot the occasional accident that may occur as he adjusts to a new routine. Comanche is crate trained, so adopters will have that tool to use in his transition.

Comanche is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
