My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Billy, a Boxer / Pug mix who was found as a stray in southern Indiana. Billy had a great temperament and tested negative for heartworm so he won a spot on a transport up north to his current foster home. Billy arrived to his foster home following his neutering and vetting. Billy did great with the 2 large resident dogs in the home as well as his fellow senior foster sister, Sadie. Billy's age was thought to be 3 years old. However, after observation, his foster mom is fairly sure he is closer to the age of 1 year old. He seems to have a tad bit of puppy still in him and his paws and tail look a little too big for his current body size. When he is full grown, he will resemble a miniature Boxer and weigh in at @ 35 lbs. most likely.

He is submissive and does well with reading other dog's body language. If a dog is playful, Billy will happily return play and go, go, go!! He has a great attitude and is so animated and peppy as he runs around the yard. Everything fascinates him and he innocently has to check out everything!! His ability to read other dogs allows him to calmly be around senior dogs like Sadie. Billy does fantastic with the cat who lives in his foster home. He walks right past the cat like the cat doesn't even exist. When Billy wants to cuddle and there isn't a dog around, he will not hesitate to take a nap with the cat.

Boxer and Pug seem to be the predominant breeds in Billy. Both are known for their happy-go-lucky attitude, loyalty and affection for their families. Billy is all this plus intelligent enough to pick up on commands and routine very quickly. Like a true Pug, Billy is sensitive to the tone of a person's voice so it is not necessary to be harsh with this kind-hearted dog. A simple 'eh-eh' when he is doing the wrong thing and a 'yes' when he is doing the right thing are the only punishment/praise he needs to figure out what is expected of him. And like a true Boxer, he uses his front feet for just about everything. His other Boxer traits include being a good watch dog over his family. He will check out any new comers to the home and welcomes everyone with no barking. He is curious, likes to be on the move, and bonds very quickly with people. His video shows off Billy's personality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u01qSJRHEI&feature=youtu.be

Billy lives with 5 children ages 2-15 years old. He does fine with the older children who are working on training him in basic obedience as well as agility. Billy does not bother the 8 year old boy in the home nor the dog savvy 5 year old but he initially kept knocking over the 2 year old in the back yard. He definitely had some puppy quirks that came out within 24 hours of his arrival and all his quirks were immediately addressed. He understands not to jump up although there are times when he is excited and really, really wants to. It is these times when he doesn't that he is verbally praised so he knows he is making the right decision by not jumping. He also did puppy nips that caused no damage but he still had to learn that dog's mouths do not come in contact with human skin unless it is for kisses. And Billy has plenty of those to give! He also was a bit of a chewer as his foster home seemed to have an endless supply of shoes and stuffed animals. Billy was limited to rope toys, Kongs, and tennis balls and he is no longer confused as to what is dog toys and what is human toys.

It only took a few days in his foster home for Billy to realize what was expected of him and what he was allowed to do. His foster mom is confident that the combination of his intelligence mixed with his strong will to please his people will make him an excellent adult dog. He needs a little bit of finishing but has learned so much since his arrival on April 19th. Billy is crated for the night and sleeps all night with no issues. He is also crated from 1-3 pm each day for a nap and again, he happily goes in his crate with no problem. He is housetrained and is on a schedule of every 3-4 hours. He has already started going to the back door and circling to let his family know of his needs to go potty. Such a smart dog!!

Billy's adoption fee is $200 which includes all his vetting to date including his neutering and a dental. He has been micro-chipped and is currently on a grain-free diet. Billy has beautiful markings and the camera does not do his coat justice! His underbite is gleaming white and it makes him just one of the cutest faces available for adoption. If you are interested in learning more about Billy, please call his foster mom Mary at 630-585-7927 for a phone interview. She will have some questions for you as well as answer any questions you may have about Billy!
