Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Jasper is about 12 years old, and was brought to the Lancaster, CA shelter
as a stray. He was said to be a terrier but we think he is a dachshund mix.
Poor little Jasper, 8 lb. and nothing but skin and bones, and creeping
around silently, as if hoping just maybe he would be safe if no one noticed
him. It never occurred to him to ask for anything. It was as if no one had
ever treated him kindly or told him he was a good boy.
Jasper is learning that the world can be a good place. He has a good
appetite although sometimes he stays under the blanket on his bed when meals
are served and then has to be carried to the kitchen to eat in peace when
the others have finished.
In the morning, he lies out in the sun. He's not a social dog but today,
for the first time, he ran in the yard briefly, chasing Stevie. And
barking, for the first time. Now, with the others, he greets his foster
excitedly at the door. There are signs that little Jasper is recovering
from years of physical and emotional neglect.
He needs a very gentle hand and a calm environment - absolutely no shouting
or yelling. He would curl up and die in boarding or an institutional
setting. Jasper needs one-on-one care in a home, with a soft bed and
someone to gently remind him that he is safe and a very good boy.
