My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Let me introduce you to Roxy, an approximately 1 year old female German Shepherd. She is an amazing dog with an incredibly loyal personality. She would make a great jogging partner and would love to do agility or play Frisbee. She has a slight frame for a Shepherd so is a large dog, but not overly so, and she is very agile.

Roxy was found abandoned in an apartment by her previous owner. It became very apparent that whoever owned her before did not properly socialize Roxy as she is a shy girl and became very overwhelmed at the humane society where she ended up. The activity and noises of the shelter terrified Roxy and she would spend her time at the back of her kennel barking and growling at anyone that came by. This of course did not benefit her when it came to showing her off to potential adopters. The volunteers who spent time with her though absolutely loved this dog and knew she would do best in a foster home rescue situation where she could settle in and her wonderful, loving personality could shine through. We took her in and almost immediately she showed her true self and is a happy, playful, and cuddly dog who adores her foster family and they in turn adore her. She’s going to be a tough one for her foster family to part with but they know that Roxy’s forever family is out there looking for her and she will be a wonderful dog to whoever is lucky enough to adopt her.

Roxy is a bit nervous when meeting new people. It takes her a few minutes to trust any new people and she will sometimes growl out of uncertainty but give her a few minutes and a treat and she will be a forever friend. Once Roxy understands that the new people are friendly to her she calms and becomes very social. Roxy needs someone who is patient and will understand her anxiety and be willing to work with her to socialize so she learns that not everyone is trying to hurt her. Roxy will need someone who will continue the work her foster home is providing her to help her gain confidence and explore the world. She needs to attend obedience school for not only the training it provides, but also for the socialization. Roxy is a very smart girl so she will do very well at dog school and will gain a lot of confidence from attending. Roxy would do well in an active home where she gets a lot of walks and outdoor activity. She is built to run so she would love a fenced in backyard where she can rip around, and a running partner would be ideal. Roxy enjoys all forms of exercise offered she and she requires daily walking and activity. She loves tearing around the yard chasing her 10 lb foster brother or being chased by him. Without regular exercise, a dog tends to get into mischief. Roxy is a normal dog that is full of energy and she does well with at least two long walks a day no matter what the weather. She loves to play fetch or with any toy that is available and there is a bounce in her step.

She is a little nervous in the car but her foster family is working on taking her for more car rides so that she will become great in the car. She loves her walks and we have found that using a Gentle Leader head halter works the best for her as she does tend to want to pull otherwise. She walks beautifully on her Gentle Leader and is a pleasure to explore the neighbourhood with.
Roxy is completely house trained and will go to the door when she needs to go out. Roxy is also crate trained and sleeps in her crate at night and when alone in the house. We are still in disbelief that such a beautiful and lovable dog was abandoned. Roxy is great with other dogs and has settled in nicely with her foster dog sister. She loves to play. She would do well in a home with another friendly, well behaved dog, but this is not a necessity for her. Roxy would do just as well being the only dog and getting all the attention to herself. Roxy is also great with her three foster cats and pretty much ignores them Roxy is not being fostered in a home with children and we believe that with her loving nature, she would do fine with older children (over 10 years) that have been educated on how to treat dogs. Roxy has been taught basic obedience and knows "sit", “lie down” and “time for bed”, “shake”. She also has excellent recall and will stop what she is doing and come when called. Roxy's new family should commit to continuing her obedience training to bring out the best in this very smart dog. In the end you will have a fantastic loyal dog that has all the love in the world to give.

Dogs are very cute and hard to resist but they do require a lot of time commitment and are not for everyone. Roxy has already been abandoned once by someone who did not understand the time and commitment a dog requires. We are looking for a person or family for her now that will ensure that she is never again abandoned, given away, or ignored. She is a loyal dog who loves her people very much, she needs that loyalty and love to be returned. Roxy’s rough start has not held her back from loving life and being a happy, affectionate girl. She is looking for a forever home to share her life with. If you are looking for a dog that is independent, super sweet and highly trainable, Roxy may just be the perfect one for you! Anyone interested in Roxy should be familiar with the German Shepherd Dog and the energy requirements and breed specific traits that go along with this wonderful breed.

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption.
