My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! I’m Oscar and I’m a member of the D.A.F. (Dachshunds Against Felines). Our mission is to rid the world of all felines or at least remind them that dogs are peoples’ best friends. Oh, I know it isn’t politically correct to stand up against any other type of animal, but I believe in being honest from the start. You’ll also find that I am not overly modest…life is too short (see…I can even make jokes about my small size…what cat do you know that will do that?)

Anyway, I am a healthy and strong 13 lb, smooth, red doxie. I’ve even been called ‘handsome’ by a few people in my day. I’ve never been to school, but I am pretty smart if I do say so myself. I know what you’re saying when you use that special tone of voice and unlike a cat, I come when called by my human mom and dad; I know ‘bedtime’ means settle down and ‘Cookie’ is a magic word along with breakfast and supper. I am super independent though so I might not always do EXACTLY what you tell me. I promise to try though. For those who wonder about these things, I am neutered, do well on a leash, love the car and am house trained. I absolutely love to go for rides in the car, especially if I can watch where we're going. If you place my car seat where I can look out the window, I am as happy as any doxie you’ve ever seen.

While I don’t like cats, I do love people…pretty much everyone I have ever met. I am also friend to all dogs…especially other doxies, but I DO NOT do well with cats…in fact, I don’t even like them as neighbors. My ideal forever home would be one where I get to be the only fur child, so I can give my people all my love. I do have a lot of energy though so a stay at home parent (retired/work from home) is a must and (perhaps) older human children who understand the special needs of Dachshunds and like to play with me and let me watch them grow up.

As you can probably tell, I have a lot of energy. I like to keep in shape so my training is non-stop. I love to play, so along with regular walks patrolling the neighborhood, I really need a secure fenced yard to run around and explore safely. I am super healthy (I have never been on any medication) so I really need a schedule and normal routine which include meal times. DAF patrols don't happen by themselves, you know.

So…there you have it...me, Oscar, in a nutshell. Do you think you could love a little doxie on a mission? Does your home and family have room for one small dog that gets along with pretty much everyone in the whole world (unless they’re of the feline persuasion or something similar)? If so, I'll be y our best friend forever!

OUR CRITERIA (aka The Fine Print):
Based on 30 years of experience with rescue doxies, we have pretty strict criteria. Do you work from home/stay at home/work part time? Have a securely fenced yard? We do not place same gender dogs in a home unless they were raised together, and children need to be 10 or older (some exceptions IF the dog is a puppy or the child has been raised with a doxie). We prefer non smokers and a home with no other small animals (ferrets, hamsters, etc) Cats are on a case by case basis depending on the dog. Remember, these are rescues; many were surrendered because of these issues.

While small in stature, doxies are big on personality and don't do well in apartments, with all of the noises and traffic that come with multiple dwellings in a confined space. To best set up our doxies and their new families for success, ODR, Inc., adopt to families who live in single family homes with secure fenced yards.

WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN WITH YOUR LITTLE RESCUE:
All our dogs are fully vetted, including spay/neuter, rabies, DHPP, Bordetella, Pyrantyl, nails trimmed, and dental when needed. They'll come with a basket of goodies, food, toys and a custom made harness. The adoption fee is $395, sorry no exceptions, as this covers the cost to rescue them, vet them and take care of them while in our rescue. It also helps towards the care of other doxies that come with huge vet or dental bills or need extensive behavioral training.

Can you give OSCAR a happy, carefree life again? If interested, please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.odr-inc.org and email it to: jrangan@comcast.net. The adoption committee will attempt to be in contact with you within 48-72 hours. Please be patient as we are solely volunteer run.
