Madeline
Female American Staffordshire/English bulldog
2 yrs old; 40 lbs

This pint-sized girl was surrendered to the shelter with her previous owner citing 'works too much,' but it was later revealed that Madeline and the other dogs she was turned in with had been living on a tether. Madeline has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite with her undeniably cute underbite and soulfully sweet eyes.

Madeline was a tiny 45 lbs when she arrived, which was fortunate since she had never learned how to walk on a leash and was overwhelmed by the noise and activity of shelter life. It appears as if she had very little appropriate human family interaction, yet she was lovable towards people and did fine with dogs and cats in the shelter.

Madeline was in desperate need of an adoptive or foster home to give her the chance to live in an environment filled with human compassion and and nurturing companionship so that she could develop her self-confidence.  Otherwise, she was not going to make it out of the shelter.

Madeline soon gained another fan. The volunteer shelter photographer took some time after a shelter photo session to study her subject. No longer restrained at the end of ropes or chains, Madeline seemed to look hopefully beyond the chain link fencing of her shelter home, as her new friend sat patiently next to her in the shelter play yard. Ashley spends two Saturdays a month sharing the gift of her photography with the shelter dogs and seemingly capturing the very essence of their spirit in hopes of revealing them to the world. But, as she peered through the lens one day, it was the photographer who was captured. Unbeknownst to both of them, Ashley would soon come to play a huge part in saving Madeline's life.

Unable to get Madeline off of her mind, Ashley carried her out of the shelter one day soon after, filled with hope that she could teach Madeline that good things do happen and that there was so much more to be discovered.

In foster care a month after arriving at the shelter, Madeline still could not even walk on a leash and was hesitant to follow anyone for a distance. She had yet to comprehend that the limits she once knew were no longer a daily part of her life, or at all. She was still tethered in spirit.

Fast-forward almost 4 months later, and Madeline now walks on a leash. She sleeps on her foster sister, Priscilla, a Weimaraner. She plays and is joyful and brings joy to those around her.  Now it is time for Madeline to move onto a loving and patient home that she can call her own, filling it with delight and reward as her family witnesses her continue to blossom into the beautiful companion that she was always meant to be.

Madeline's is current on vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped. She tested low positive for heartworms and can stay on monthly heartworm preventative, which is required for all dogs, anyway.
