8.6.15 Update
Zoey has settled into her foster home and is pretty close to perfect! We have not seen any of her submissive peeing or the same scared dog that we saw in the beginning…for quite some time now. We do still struggle at the vet’s office and continue to muzzle Zoey while she is there. But since she has built a bond and trust with her foster mommy and daddy, if they talk to her and stay close to her while she is being vetted, she does not growl, snap, or carry on like she used to.
Zoey’s issues seem to stem from 1) fear and 2) trust. That is why it will be critical for Zoey’s family to attend training classes with her immediately to help establish that bond and trust between Zoey and her family.
Zoey will do best in a home that has older children, where she is supervised with visiting children, an active home (hikes, walks, etc.), and at least one other dog. She will do fine as an only dog but does bond very quickly with at least one dog in the home. She is currently being fostered with multiple dogs of different sizes but has chosen one dog and is inseparable from him!
Zoey’s adoptive family should expect a period of fear from her. It takes Zoey a little longer than normal to adjust. Her fear will be exhibited in the form of fear/submissive peeing, tail tucked, avoidance, and maybe even accidents in her crate.
6.18.15 Update:
FFGDR learned that while Zoey was absolutely wonderful with her original family, but she was surrendered because she became protective of her family. Meaning, she has shown aggression towards new people while protecting her family. Unfortunately, her original owners were inexperienced and did not know how to deal with it.
Zoey needs an experienced adopter who has dealt with dominant dogs, guarding issues, lack of socialization and fear aggression at the veterinarian’s office. Experienced adopter will need to show proof of registration in a formal 6-8 weeks training class at the time of adoption.

My name is Zoey.
I am a female Fawn Great Dane.
I am two years old.
When I first came to the rescue, I had lost my home and my family and it made me very scared and timid. I didn’t know what was going to happen to me.
My foster parents said that they had never seen a dog have it’s tail tucked so far under that it looked like part of my stomach.
After a few days of slow introductions to other dogs and cats, I gained confident in myself. However, I am a little slow in adjusting to humans. So far, people have been so nice to me, I am learning to trust them and be care free.
I love to play outside! My ideal home would have a fenced in yard.
I also enjoy being with another dog that has the same type of energy level. I’d love it if you have a dog that can be my forever canine sibling!
I do very well with my male foster canine (Great Dane). I also do very well with females and small dogs.
Cats? Hmmmm….. I don’t really know what to think of cats. I’m very curious about them. Don’t worry, I don’t chase cats.
Whenever it’s time for me to relax, I get very comfortable with a dog bed. I enjoy chilling out with my two and four legged pals.
I like my crate. When it’s time for my foster humans to leave, I just run right into it. No problem at all!
I am potty-trained (house-trained). However, my foster parents are telling me that it is not acceptable to potty in the crate. That’s funny, I learned that it was acceptable before. Well, if I want to make my humans happy, I’ll need to re-learn and leave my crate smelling fresh!
I really like my toys! My favorite toys are the ones that squeak. I just love to toss them in the air and run around the yard, playing with my squeaky toys!
I really like it every time I hear my foster parents telling everyone that I’m a very sweet puppy. Sadly, I know they are not my forever humans. So, I need a forever home that has a lot of patience with me and to help me with my socialization. I just can not wait to be the dog I really want to be —— a very loving and obedience dog who will get lots of loving from my forever family!
