Bella is a 13-month-old, cream colored, Dachshund/Italian Greyhound weighing only 7 pounds. Bella’s former owners kept her outside 10 hours a day on a tie-out while they went to work. Recently, they discovered that a coyote was watching Bella from the hillside above their home. Knowing that Bella was now in danger, they contacted us and we took Bella into our protection. They told us Bella was a cream dachshund, purchased from a pet store. Well part of that was true. She was purchased from a store in a strip-mall, but she is not a purebred dachshund. Bella is definitely a Dachshund/Italian Greyhound mix. No matter, we could not resist Bella’s soft eyes and sweet demeanor. So, now here she is in rescue, waiting for a wonderful home.

Bella is very petite, with legs just slightly taller than a dachshund. The best part about Bella is that she would be fine in a home with stairs. Her mixed heritage ensures a stronger, healthier life. But for now, she is a bit underweight and getting three meals a day to put some meat on her little bones.

Bella’s foster mom describes her this way: “Sweet, funny, playful. She runs like a little gazelle. Good appetite, potty training is coming along nicely. A little timid at first, but likes everybody she meets. She seems to have a flirtatious preference for men. She has the potential to be barky and protective, so early training will be important. She sleeps in the crate, but would love to worm her way into the people’s bed. Loves to be held and carried like a baby. She's good in the car and likes to go shopping or anywhere with her person. She enjoys going on a walk with other doxies. She's not sure how to play with other dogs yet, but she's very interested in it. They will teach her. I think she can learn the dog door, but she doesn't have enough weight to push it open yet! She's very vocal and makes hilarious sounds of moaning pleasure, annoyed complaining, and attention demanding. Bella loves to play and will fetch a ball or toys for as long as you are willing to keep throwing it for her.”

Due to Bella’s initial upbringing with a family that basically just tied her up and ignored her throughout her entire puppy period, we are looking for a specific home that will help reinforce Bella’s ongoing socialization. Therefore, the home we seek is one with another friendly and socialized, welcoming canine friend (preferably a boy dog) and with either adults who enjoy taking their dogs out and about, or a family, however, if there are kids present, please have them be over the age of 8, or finally, as the only dog in the home but only if people are home. At this juncture in Bella’s rescue program, we will not be deviating from this criteria.

Bella’s vaccines are up-to-date and she has been spayed and micro-chipped. In our opinion, she is a very rare jewel. If you are interested in Bella, please complete our adoption application, and contact Dena at dena@scdr.org or call (562) 694-6868. Note: There is also a home check as part of the application process.
