John Wayne, the other Duke, once said, “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.” This Duke, whose foster mama is an English teacher, says, “A dog has to do what a dog has to do.” So what does Duke do? Duke is persistent and LOVES to cuddle, kiss, and use his giant paws as a subtle reminder that the human’s job is to pet him A LOT.
Duke is bigger than most beagles. Every day his foster parents say he reminds them of another breed. Maybe boxer, maybe bulldog, maybe basset hound. His parts don’t match because he’s got the beagle ears and big brown eyes, but he has boxer jowls with a bulldog body and beagle legs and a tail that never stops wagging. He has the beagle AROOOO, he loves to sing, and he loves to sniff. He’s about 45 lbs. and though he carries the weight well, he should lose about 5 lbs. Even though he’s on the larger side, he is super gentle and sweet and definitely not an alpha. He loves long walks, sniffing in the backyard, chewing on an antler, and hanging out on the couch. He is a puller on the leash, but he’s learning some manners, and we are optimistic he’ll improve with training and practice.
Duke sometimes plays with the alpha beagle sister in the house and he’s curious about the older beagle basset boy, but he respects boundaries and knows when to leave them alone. Duke doesn’t understand he’s a little bigger than the other dogs in the house, so he’s occasionally flattened his beagle sister while playing, but he’s not mean or aggressive in any way. He has great big paws that he bats at his humans for attention and he is happiest snuggling and being pet.
Duke does have a distinctive voice that he uses often. He would not be good in an apartment because he can be loud especially around meal time or when you come home from work. He also has an adorable voice when he sings to show he’s happy, and it’s guaranteed to make you smile.
Note from foster parents: While Duke is a little bigger and louder than some beagles we’ve had, he has been one of the easiest fosters we’ve had the pleasure to take care of. His gentle nature and sweet disposition make him an ideal pet.
