My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

4/12/16 - I'VE BEEN ADOPTED!

Adoption Fee: $200

Fostered in Texas

Age: 9 years

Weight: 6.5 lbs.

11/12/15 - Gigi is officially the Granny in her foster home. She enjoys eating and LOVES sleeping. Comfort is top priority as she will make even the biggest dog in her foster home move to get the most comfortable and largest bed. Everyone usually respects her and understands that she isn’t wanting or trying to be alpha, just has earned her way.

She has started to enjoy some rubbing, but only on her terms and will let you know when she is ready for it to stop. She is vocal about letting you know when she is ready to eat or wants to go out.

Gigi is looking for a retirement home when there are no children, no active dogs and a mom and/or dad that understands that she isn’t clingy and doesn’t have to have a lot of attention. It is unfortunate, because we feel that if earlier on in life, Gigi would have had attention and been smothered with love, she would be used to it and want it more now. But please don’t let this turn you away. She still needs a home to call her own and truly deserves it. Gigi shouldn’t be overlooked just because humans failed her in the past and she did not totally learn the usual dependent Yorkie personality. Is there someone out there that can prove to Gigi that she is special.

6/25/15 - All things change with time. The smell of a new car fades; holes eventually wear in the soles of shoes and humans get wrinkles. Like so many dogs in our country’s shelters, Gigi was likely dumped at the shelter because she is no longer that cuddly puppy with the yummy puppy breath. But, if you are a “glass half-full” kind-of person, both jeans and boots get more comfortable with time, wrinkles indicate where smiles have been and adopting an adult dog is a pleasure!

When Gigi was turned into the shelter, she was in horrible shape, matted, tick and flea infested, but amazingly heartworm free. Guess those mosquitoes couldn’t find a way in through all that matted hair. The shelter contacted us because they were afraid that with the medical help she needed, and her estimated age, they would not be able to adopt her out and she would be euthanized.

Her foster mom was not going to let that happen, so she ran over and swooped up this pitiful bag of bones. That day was a great day for Gigi, but since she had gone so long without food, medical attention, love and affection, she was somewhat “shut down” mentally.

It took a couple of days of eating and sleeping before foster mom and dad could see that Gigi wasn’t going to be as ancient as first expected. She is now strong enough to walk without her back legs giving out on her due to weakness. She does have the very early signs of a cataract in her left eye, but sees fine.

Gigi is a zen little girl and pretty much stays to herself. Not timid, not fierce. She doesn’t interact with the pups in the home, but does not mind them existing in her space. She will, however, let them know she is displeased if one is laying in a bed she feels is hers. She has a Marlene Dietrich smokey bark. Not piercing at all. She will not hesitate to bark to let you know she is displeased. This usually involves wanting food, someone in a bed she wants, or that she needs to go outside. When the others get to barking she will join in in a move for solidarity, but if she starts it she wants food, potty or a bed. So heartwarming to watch them go from “given up” to demanding.

At some point in Gigi’s life, someone taught her to sit and she will wait patiently for treats with the other pups. She rides good in the car and isn’t nervous at all. Outside she will explore a little, but will also let you know when it is time to go in. She eats like a horse and is now quite vocal when she wants food (see video). She’s also a begger, but we can imagine going so long without, she wants it all. Currently, which is subject to change as she continues to feel better, Gigi likes all people, but only really gives you attention when you have something to offer her (food). She is very food motivated. She doesn’t care about toys at all.

Her foster mom says that this girl is a potty trained pro. If you leave her too long, she will go in the middle of the floor. No remorse. But getting her out regularly fixes this.

Gigi would do best in a slow paced lifestyle with parents to love her and accept that she isn’t clingy. She is not looking for a leader, nor is she looking for a playmate. She has found herself to be all the company she needs right now. Foster mom calls her the Buddist Monk of the family right now. She quietly observes, does not judge, and continues along the path that has given her strength, but remains alone. Prove to Gigi that not everyone tires of things so quickly and give her the strength to love again, trust again and a last name for the rest of her life.
