My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATE Aug 13, 2015: Gypsy will require time to adjust to any adoptive family and will need to have several visits and sleepovers before she can bond to someone. She is also still quite nervous in public and needs a family that will slowly get her used to the world around her and be patient and relaxed in new environments. She will do best with a small family such as a single person or a couple who are able to continue to help her with her journey on learning to be a happy house pet.

--------

Hi, my name is Gypsy and I am a female spayed basset hound lab cross and I am around a year old and about 30lbs. Since I grew up on the streets of California struggling to get by, I became very fearful of humans and protected every little scrap of food I could find. One day I was taken in by an organization which shipped me to Canada with about 200 others dogs and I was adopted right away as soon as I got off the plane. I was very confused and had no idea what was happening to me; I've been traveling so much in my short life already.

Unfortunately the tools I learned to survive on the streets were not acceptable in this new home and my owner was not sure how to overcome the habits that I had developed; my bossy attitude and independent nature got me in trouble. My mom was very sad to have to give me up but we were not a good match as she did not have the skills or experience to deal with a dog like me. She brought me to a place she knew I would be well taken care of and that’s when I arrived at Canine Harmony.

When I first arrived I was protective of my food and I liked to guard all of my resources. This environment was very new and different to me because there were so many dogs and lots of people I didn't know. I was given a routine that I slowly grew to understand and now I love it! The girls here are very patient with me began to teach me new tools and worked with my challenging habits. They taught me to sit and wait patiently for my meals and while I resisted at first, I now let them pet me while I eat and they can even touch my food bowl and I don't mind. It was hard to learn to trust at first, but now I am realizing that not all people are scary and that it's okay if I share with those I love and trust.

I have a large foster family here at Canine Harmony and everyone has fallen in love with my big brown eyes and my adorable purple spotted tongue. I play outside with dogs everyday and I am very social and comfortable with dogs of all sizes and personalities. I have my own kennel inside where I sleep at night, eat my meals and enjoy a rest when I'm done playing with my pals. If I get into anything I am not supposed to, I trust my foster family now and I will let them gently take an object away from me or move me away from the area to keep me from getting into any trouble. I have even had some sleepovers with my favourite people and have decided that I really like cuddling and getting snuggles and massages. I also got to meet some cats which was really exciting! I wanted to play with them but they didn't want to play with me so I just left them alone. I am also potty trained and I let my foster family know when I have to go potty.

I have made amazing progress since arriving at Canine Harmony and I am now ready to find a loving forever home, but still need help with my manners and social skills!

I need a family that will give me lots of attention as I love to cuddle up and watch a movie and get belly rubs. I also need someone who is patient with me and will approach me calmly when I am doing something I am not supposed to be doing. Someone who will continue with my routine and ask me to sit and wait for all my meals and someone who will continue to let me socialize with other dogs and let me run around at the park. I might be little and love to cuddle, but I also love to run and play! I need a home without small children because I don't think they will approach me calmly if I borrow their toys and that could stress me out. While I love playing with other dogs, I would prefer to live in a home without other dogs so I can receive the attention I need to continue flourishing and learning all about life. I am still nervous of strangers and so I need someone who will continue to work with me on meeting people and who will use a relaxed and positive approach in all aspects of my life.

I am a super loving girl and am looking for a second chance at life. Could you be the one to help me find my “Furry-Tail” ending?

My rescue facility does not allow public viewing of adoptable animals so I won't get stressed out. If you are interested in me, please email info@canineharmony.com and ask for an adoption application. If they like your application they will want to meet you and see if your home is a suitable place for me to live because they love me and only want the very best for me. It might take some time to adopt me, as I need time to learn to trust new people, but I promise you it will be worth it!
