Bear's story:

" Bear is approximately eight years old – and the most gentle Akita in the world. He’s neutered and healthy, and is a gorgeous black and white fluffy boy, with freckled feet. Bear had been an outdoor dog, living with a female Akita, and a house full of young children, that played with him and took him for walks. But in November 2013 – the owners were evicted and decided to drop Bear at the SPCA. The owner’s cousin, Shirley, stepped in and took Bear, with the goal of finding a new home for him. Unfortunately, Bear turned up heartworm positive and was unneutered. It took almost a year to get Bear cleared for adoption, as he could not be neutered until he was heartworm free -- and the whole time, he was living in the house, with a hyper female Shih Tzu who Bear just loved to play with. In March 2015, he was adopted by a young family with two small girls, a one and five year old. He was completely gentle and loving with them, but after a month, the adoptive mother decided to return Bear and get a puppy. Shirley took him back without hesitation, and while Bear was getting his shots up dated, his favorite Veterinarian at Poquoson Animal Hospital, and a vet tech that knew Bear, offered to foster Bear. While Shirley loved Bear, she just didn’t have the time for him, and we all knew Bear deserved better living conditions. The doctor and vet tech’s only concern was whether their very dominant male Shih Tzu, and their eight year male old boxer, who had not been properly socialized in his youth, would tolerate Bear in the home. However, the three boys met and all are getting along just fine. Matt and Tara have found that Bear is a very sweet gentleman, a real live teddy bear - he’s completely house trained, great with their two dogs, absolutely loves to be with people, and loves to go for walks. So we know Bear is good with dogs of all sizes, children of all ages, and just wants to be around people - where he will feel secure and loved. We are all so emotionally invested in finding Bear a permanent home - where he will be a treasured family member and house dog. "
