Abbie is a one-year-old sweet, affectionate, and playful 12 lb. Dachshund/Miniature Pinscher mix adopted by a private party from the Devore Animal Shelter. But then, the new owner wanted to return Abbie because she was not really the dog they wanted; i.e., a Sheltie type. Abbie has the long body and adorably stubby legs of a Dachshund, with a distinct Min Pin look about her. She is smart (she quickly learned to come when called and to sit on command), and while she is generally calm and quiet, she does have a playful side as well. Abbie is not aggressive or dominant with other dogs; she gets along well with the two other dogs in her foster home. She imitates the every move of the slightly older, 18 lb. female Beagle mix while out on walks, and she loves to chase and wrestle on the floor with the foster home’s gentle 55 lb. male Boxer mix. Abbie is still young and impressionable and can basically follow the lead of the already well-behaved dogs in your home. While it was obvious she had not been around cats, she has, in a short time, grown accustomed to the foster home’s dog-savvy cats, occasionally playing with and snuggling up to them as well, so we would consider an adoptive home with cats, but only those cats with dog experience.

Abbie loves to be included in the action, following her favorite person around the house whenever she is not resting or playing with a dog companion. She has also done well in a household with children (her former adoptive home). She is good at walking on the leash, tending not to pull and staying close to the person walking her. She enjoys energetic play, but will just as soon nap at her human’s feet, or seek to snuggle up on a lap or couch. Though she is getting better with continued exposure to new people and things, she can still show some defensive posturing upon first meeting new people in her home environment, but is quick to warm up once she realizes it is a friend and not a foe, especially when treats are involved! We are sure that her confidence will continue grow through ongoing socialization and exposure to new experiences.

Abbie is crate-trained and sleeps quietly throughout the night in the crate without incident. She has the core of housetraining down, (though potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment). She also rides well in the car. Abbie is a sensitive type; she seems eager to please and responds well to gentle correction. She can be extremely affectionate once she gets to know you, very loving of her people, giving lots of kisses. The home we seek for Abbie is a household with an already existing friendly and welcoming pup who can be her playmate and also help her continue in her development and confidence level. A home with either a small yard or a dog door would be ideal.
