My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tanner is too shy to get up in front of everyone, so he’s asked me, his foster mom, to tell you a little bit about him. Tanner used to be owned by a hunter. Due to his fears, his hunter had no use for him. Afraid that his owner was going to take Tanner for a final walk in the woods with his gun, someone who knew the hunter offered him a trade: a gun for Tanner. Well, the hunter thought that was a pretty good deal, getting something useful for something useless. The trade was made, and the man who then had Tanner turned him over to an animal rescue person he knew who in turn contacted Midwest BREW. And so, he came to live with us: me, a foster dad and a girl and boy beagle. We knew beforehand that Tanner was terrified of all people; the person who fostered him before us said she’d never known a dog so full of fear. Neither she nor her husband were able to get anywhere near him. We believe he’s never been touched and if so, it wasn’t a positive experience. He didn’t know what being petted was.
Tanner has now been with us for a few months. He loves the other dogs, and has come to trust me, his foster mom. He will take treats from my hand and loves to snuggle up when no one else is around. He likes the doggie door since he can come and go without having a person stand by an open door. Doors can be scary things, too. But he still doesn’t trust his foster dad. We continue to work on that.
This scared little boy will need a quiet and extremely patient forever home to help him continue to blossom, preferably someone with experience with fearful dogs. His hope is for a mom or two in his new home, he could do without a dad! He needs the companionship of a confident dog, and a securely fenced yard. Even though Tanner’s not confident, we hope that he will find just the right person to continue on his journey to a life without fear.
