My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

If you are looking for a small Shih Tzu to be a “home body” with you, then please apply for Georgie! He is 11 pounds, and a real clingy7year old boy who just wants to know he will never be separated from you. He lived his entire six years in a puppy mill in Arkansas in a wire crate with no one to love him and care for him. Now that he has experienced the comforts of a foster home with a caring person who will pet him, rub his tummy, sit with him, and let him sleep with his head on her leg, he will exhibit some anxiety when she is not home! We are looking for a home for Georgie with his owner who will be there almost all of the time, or someone who can take him along wherever they go. He loves riding in the car in the seat right next to you. He may also enjoy another little dog around the house because he is just learning to play bow, and play chase!
Due to his neglect in the puppy mill, Georgie had an eye injury that was never treated and his retina became detached. He is now blind in that eye. The retina in his other eye has a strong chance of detaching also, so he will be having a new laser surgery that has been highly successful. His retina will be “welded” to the back of his eye to reduce the chances of detachment to 2%! We can almost guarantee that he will always have good sight in his second eye the rest of his life. This surgery has now been completed and we are awaiting his follow-up visit with our Ophthalmologist.
Georgie has never learned to play with toys, but he has learned what grass is now and he loves sitting next to you outside, watching all the new things around him. Many times he will just stop and stare while he is on a walk, not from being stubborn, but because he has seen something new and he just wants to soak it all in. He has really enjoyed the fenced in yard at his doggie day care, and he will run and explore and follow another dog around for hours—while his day care Mom is working in the yard.

His house training has been a bit slow, but he is catching on, and will make quick progress with someone who is home with him all day to take him out frequently. He has learned that he goes out the first thing when we get up, and the last thing before bed. It is the in between where he needs further help. Remember that he has lived a life of six years in a cage with no “let’s go potty outside”!
Through lots of training and experience Georgie’s foster Mom will tell you that it may take days for Georgie to feel comfortable in his new owners’ home, and weeks before he settles in and his training can be completed and the anxieties lessen. STRMN will be there for you every step of this journey offering help to set his boundaries, guidelines, and even several extended visits to assure your adoption decision.
We don’t want to forget one of the most endearing characteristics about Georgie. He has half a tail! We do not know if another dog bit it off, or if it got stuck somewhere it should not have, or worse, but he looks adorable and so puppy-like, strutting down the sidewalk with his tail straight up! His sweet face melts your heart, and his tail is the frosting on the cake!
Please consider giving Georgie a permanent home where he can feel comfortable, secure, and very well loved.

Georgie is neutered, up to date on all his vaccinations, is micro chipped and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. His adoption fee is $270.00 plus $19.64 sales tax, for a total of $289.64. His foster mom would like his adopters to be able to be with Georgie most of the time, and commit to attending the STRMN Rescue Reunion held each year. She will consider adopters who live within 20 miles of the Twin Cities area.

To meet Georgie, please complete an adoption application. Or you can also see him and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Minnetonka Petco near Ridgedale the last Saturday of every month.
