My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

October 2015 update: Maggie is a gentle, graceful mixed breed dog who is 1-2 years old. Her breed is a mystery - Shepherd, Carolina Dog, and Border Collie mixes all come to mind. She is such a beautiful young dog! Our southern partner rescue tells us, “Her shiny black coat has snow white markings and is perfect for petting. Maggie weighs 48 pounds. She has one of those wonderfully expressive doggy faces that looks like she is smiling at you. Maggie is a great walking companion and is housebroken. She also loves playtime in the shelter yard. She has a sweet, friendly personality that is so endearing. She is very loving and is always ready for quality cuddle time."

Maggie is a bright dog who knows the sit command already. She is very agile and would probably love to take an agility class. She can jump a baby gate from a standstill.

Maggie is cautious with new people and seems to warm up to women more easily; once she gets to know you she will be a wonderful family dog!!

Now that Maggie is in Maine she is starting to relax in her foster home. She is an alert girl and always positioning herself to watch what’s going on.

Her foster mom tells us, “Maggie is crate trained and housebroken. She is sweet and loving towards people she trusts, it can take some time for her to warm up to new people. She has bonded to me and follows me everywhere. She is extremely smart and tries very hard to please, she takes correction well and stops immediately when you tell her "no" or "leave it". She knows some other basic commands, listens well, and adjusts her behavior when asked. She is agile and has the concentration and energy it would take to become a great agility dog. She gets along with my dogs, but for this girl, it's really all about her human.

She is living peacefully with my three cats, but I would not leave her with them unsupervised, as she is a bit too interested in them. She wants to be sheriff when my other dogs need correction. She is nervous in new situations and places and she does have some guarding tendencies towards toys and food. Maggie is not a dog for the first-time owner or the marshmallow owner who is unwilling to take a leadership role in the relationship.

Maggie would be fine as an only dog. She would shine with a human all her own who will be a gentle consistent leader and focus her energy on agility or other sports. She is very sweet with people. My dogs are relaxed with her, but they don't interact with her like they have with other foster dogs. She might be part Basenji. She doesn't really bark, she sort of howls and whines. She will be a great dog in the right home.”

Maggie is living with several other dogs but would prefer to play with humans - she doesn't cause any major problems but she doesn't really seem to know how to properly interact with them and has some guarding tendencies. She would do well as an "only child" where she could feel relaxed and have some fun since she prefers the company of humans. She would do great with an active adult who can appreciate her intelligence and keep her firmly in check. She's protective and loyal, and has become very attached to her foster mom. She needs an owner who can appreciate that her intelligence can lead to problems if not managed correctly.

Please note, we do not have a physical location, but we are supported by a network of wonderful foster homes that are spread throughout New England. A dog will need to be visited by a prospective adopter in the foster home where they are feeling safe and comfortable.
