My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is a courtesy listing for another group. Please email S.A.M direct at saveamuttkennel@yahoo.com for more information on Checkers.

We are waiving the adoption fee and only asking for only our minimum holding deposit. There is nothing wrong with this baby the reason the fee is waived. We just want to spark some interest that is all. It is unfair for such a wonderful dog to be stuck in rescue when there is a home out there. Transport to CT can be arranged.

Date of birth estimated to be 7-1-2013 per the vet. He was pulled from a high kill shelter in NC so we do not know his exact history. He is an Australian cattle dog mix. My best educated guess he is mixed with border collie. I have one of those mixes; she has been with me for 16 years. That mix is excellent and makes a wonderful and VERY smart dog. Checkers is no exception to the “smart “category”! He picked up on some basic commands pretty darn quick. Checkers is around 40 pounds and he has a very pleasing coat pattern. He is very attentive and very treat motivate. That equals easy trainability in most dogs. Checkers is good with other dogs. However given the breed mix he is prone to chase cats. He has done well with my cats that are used to new dogs and they don’t run. However if one wants to play “catch me if you can”, Checkers will chase them willingly. So I would rather him go to a home with no cats, or at least someone who has common knowledge on how to work with dogs such as Checkers and someone who knows how to introduce dogs to cats properly! Checkers is excellent with all the humans he has met. He is even ok with kids. He would make someone an excellent companion, esp if they are the active type. Checkers would make an excellent exercise buddy. He needs a home where he can be provided with ample exercise and room. Do some research on the breeds and you will see they don’t do well with a job!

Checkers has had all his vaccinations, heartworm testing and will be micro-chipped and neutered prior to going to his new home. He is current on flea prevention and de-worming as well. He will go with 2 different options for very affordable pet health insurance. He will receive a health certificate and a complete physical exam by our vet no more than 48 hrs prior to going to his new home if he is adopted out of state.

We do require a pre screen application to apply. You can find the application as well as answers to the common adoption questions on our main web site www.saveamuttkennel-ny.info. Please read the FAQ page while you are there. Low cost transport can be secured for all out of state adoptions, so don’t let the fact of the distance keep you from adopting this wonderful pet. All our pets are fostered in VA and NC until they are adopted.
