Facts about Lucy

  • Breed: Quarterhorse Mix
  • Color: Chestnut/Sorrel
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Medium
  • Sex: Female
Lucy is an 11 year old mare, assumed Quarter Horse though she's not registered. She's 14.3 hands tall. Lucy came to us in spring 2015 neglected physically and mentally. She showed severe anxiety around people at that time. She's since been to professional training, treated for ulcers, gotten healthy, and received needed hoof care. She now loves people once she gets to know them and she rides great for people she's comfortable with. She does still need handlers/riders who understand horsemanship and the concepts of how horses learn, as she will still get anxious if she's given conflicting signals (such as a beginner who squeezes her to go but then pulls back on the reins at the same time).
Lucy rides English and Western, enjoys trails, and enjoys jumping. She has an awesome trot that is very easy to sit and a comfortable canter as well. She has been to a schooling show, competing in dressage, crossrails, and a couple Western classes. Lucy pastures well with mares or geldings and is neither excessively dominant or submissive. She has no health issues. Lucy rides bareback great and has even been jumped bareback.
For the right rider, Lucy is a very fun horse! She has consistently gotten more relaxed with new situations and with a good horseman as her owner, she could go far in whatever discipline you wanted to work with her in.
Lucy's adoption fee is negotiable depending on the amount of lessons her new owner will need with her and our trainer.
Lucy sells with a no breeding contract.

About CARE - Crossroads Animal Rescue

About Our Shelter...

CARE was founded to decrease euthanasias in Oconee County, SC. We primarily aquire animals from the local animal control. Most of these pets would be euthanized if we did not take them. Once in our program, they are adopted out through us or transfered to another rescue/shelter where they are not at risk for euthanasia.
We work primarily with puppies and kittens as this is the age group most likely to be euthanized at our local animal control.
Our equine rescues are primarily neglect cases from animal control. We design feeding programs for them to gain weight back safely, provide hoof care, and treat any medical problems. Once healthy enough to adopt, we find them loving homes.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Come to 8409 W. Oak Hwy, Seneca, SC anytime during business hours to meet our on-site pets. Our on-site pets are primarily puppies in the 4-6 month range and all ages of kittens and cats. To meet a pet in a foster home (this includes most young puppies as well as most adult dogs and all the horses), call or email to schedule a time. We will arrange to have the dogs/puppies brought to the clinic for you to meet or arrange for you to go to the foster home where the horse is staying.
We periodically have adoption events where we take some of our adoptable pets. Follow us on Facebook to learn of adoption events.

Our Adoption Process...

To adopt a pet from CARE, contact us and give us the information for our adoption application. This can be via phone or by going to our website, downloading the adoption application, and filling it out and emailing it to us.
Once we receive your application, we will contact your vet references and review the application to approve you. This can usually be done on the same day you apply. Sending in the application does not obligate you to adopt.
You may meet our onsite pets prior to filling out the application if you prefer. For off site pets, we do request an approved application before scheduling a meeting.
To adopt after being approved, you simply pay the adoption fee and take your new family member home! You may adopt over the phone and then schedule to travel to meet your new pet. Adopting over the phone does require paying the adoption fee which is non-refundable if you change your mind about adopting.
Adoption fees vary depending on which pet you are interested in. These are often listed on the pet's profile but if not, feel free to email or call to ask.
We are available for phone calls weekdays 8a-5p and Saturdays 8a-Noon. You will reach the receptionist for Crossroads Animal Hospital which is the vet hospital who founded CARE. After working hours, we can be reached via email which is usually checked daily but may take up to 48 hours for a reply.
