Facts about Lucy

  • Breed: Quarterhorse Mix
  • Color: Chestnut/Sorrel
  • Age: Adult
  • Size: Medium
  • Sex: Female
Lucy is about 11 years old, 14.3 hands tall. She's a grade Quarter Horse mare. Lucy is friendly and will meet you at the gate to be worked with once she knows you. Lucy came to us abused and very anxious and she has spent time in professional training working on her walk/trot/lope, riding in an arena and on trails, and riding with other horses and alone. At this point, she is comfortable with all that plus enjoys jumping crossrails... as long as she has an experienced rider who understands horsemanship and how to apply pressure and release on the ground and under saddle. With a novice rider, Lucy still lacks confidence.
We would like to find Lucy a home with someone who has extensive riding experience and a desire to learn or already has experience in training techniques. An intermediate rider would be considered if that person has an interest in training and would be riding under a trainer's supervision.
Lucy's adoption will include lessons with our trainer. Lucy bonds strongly with her rider so this will help smooth the transition. Once Lucy is comfortable with her rider, she is a fun horse to ride, but she does need a rider who can give her confidence when asked to do new things. We would also consider a free lease on Lucy. Lucy's adoption fee will be discussed on a case by case basis - our primary desire is to find her a home that will further her knowledge/training.

Update: You can now get daily updates on Lucy's progress on her Facebook page, found at

Our horses have received their basic vaccinations (Rabies vaccine, EWT combo vaccine) at the time of adoption. They have been dewormed and have a negative Coggins test as well. All horses have received a hoof assessment and trimming. Horses are also microchipped.

We do our best to determine what amount of training they have had and to represent them as accurately as possible. However, we usually do not know the history of our horses, so we determine training by how the horses act after we get them.

We desire for our horses to find a good home where the horse will be a good fit with the person adoption him/her. With that goal in mind, we do our best to accurately represent everything, good and bad, with our horses.

CARE provides one week free boarding until you can pick up your new horse. Adoption fees are sometimes negotiable to the right home. For more information, please email us at You can see our adoption applications and and more info about our rescue on our website, To make the adoption process faster, please submit an adoption application through our website. This in no way obligates you - it simply gets you approved to meet/adopt our horses. You can also call us at 864-972-9994.

About CARE - Crossroads Animal Rescue

About Our Shelter...

CARE was founded to decrease euthanasias in Oconee County, SC. We primarily aquire animals from the local animal control. Most of these pets would be euthanized if we did not take them. Once in our program, they are adopted out through us or transfered to another rescue/shelter where they are not at risk for euthanasia.
We work primarily with puppies and kittens as this is the age group most likely to be euthanized at our local animal control.
Our equine rescues are primarily neglect cases from animal control. We design feeding programs for them to gain weight back safely, provide hoof care, and treat any medical problems. Once healthy enough to adopt, we find them loving homes.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Come to 8409 W. Oak Hwy, Seneca, SC anytime during business hours to meet our on-site pets. Our on-site pets are primarily puppies in the 4-6 month range and all ages of kittens and cats. To meet a pet in a foster home (this includes most young puppies as well as most adult dogs and all the horses), call or email to schedule a time. We will arrange to have the dogs/puppies brought to the clinic for you to meet or arrange for you to go to the foster home where the horse is staying.
We periodically have adoption events where we take some of our adoptable pets. Follow us on Facebook to learn of adoption events.

Our Adoption Process...

To adopt a pet from CARE, contact us and give us the information for our adoption application. This can be via phone or by going to our website, downloading the adoption application, and filling it out and emailing it to us.
Once we receive your application, we will contact your vet references and review the application to approve you. This can usually be done on the same day you apply. Sending in the application does not obligate you to adopt.
You may meet our onsite pets prior to filling out the application if you prefer. For off site pets, we do request an approved application before scheduling a meeting.
To adopt after being approved, you simply pay the adoption fee and take your new family member home! You may adopt over the phone and then schedule to travel to meet your new pet. Adopting over the phone does require paying the adoption fee which is non-refundable if you change your mind about adopting.
Adoption fees vary depending on which pet you are interested in. These are often listed on the pet's profile but if not, feel free to email or call to ask.
We are available for phone calls weekdays 8a-5p and Saturdays 8a-Noon. You will reach the receptionist for Crossroads Animal Hospital which is the vet hospital who founded CARE. After working hours, we can be reached via email which is usually checked daily but may take up to 48 hours for a reply.
