Northgate Brewing

783 Harding St NE, Minneapolis MN –

Hi there! My name is Myrtle. I am 13 years young and weigh about 12 pounds.

I am a BIG sweetie in a little package. Don’t let my age fool you - I act much younger and have many miles left on these paws! I am a friendly gal and a social butterfly. I get excited for walks and like to run so I can feel the breeze blow through my beautiful hair! I like to balance my daily exercise activities with relaxation and cuddling. I can be quite the couch potato and though I am not a huge lap dog, I DO love to snuggle up with my humans. Maybe we can watch Netflix together sometime!

I get along well with other dogs, but would also be content being the only dog in a family. I don't really have teeth and am really nice to other dogs. I like walks in the park and exploring the outdoors. Car rides are so much fun and I am always ready for an adventure!

I sleep well in a dog bed next to my foster mom’s bed and I do well in a gated area when my family is gone for the day. You will come home to no damage and a pup excited to see you! I am potty trained and can even do my business on potty pads if you leave them out with me! I am great with older children and adults. I even know some commands like “go for a walk” and “go in the car.” Yes, I am a genius dog.

A patient family who is looking to give a sweet senior pup a wonderful home is just what I need. A quiet home with little to no steps would be fabulous, unless you want to help me sometimes and carry me up and down them like the queen that I am! After living life in a commercial breeding facility, steps have been a challenge for me. They are just so weird!

I am a bit skittish and frighten by loud noises. I mean, the garbage truck and thunder storms are so scary, am I right?! A lot of my dog friends are scared of thunderstorms, too! I will often pace when I get nervous, but I want you to know that I am trying my best to be brave! I love following my humans around and getting attention and simply want a home to call my own. Especially if there are treats around!! I am a sweet little package waiting to take over your heart (and your couch!). When can we meet?!

Please understand that all of our pets are in foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please email us to confirm attendance.

To fill out an online adoption application please visit our website     Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN.  All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at 952-929-0777 or email us at for more information.

All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website  and fill out a foster application.

Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets.  All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet.  All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal.

About Underdog Rescue MN

About Our Rescue Group...

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”

Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control.

While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.

Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Our Adoption Process...

If you are considering adopting one of our pets, keep in mind that we have several policies regarding placement.

We only adopt to homes within 60 miles of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Only on a case by case basis do we place female dogs in homes with current female dogs.
We will not place our pets in homes with unaltered animals.
We have a strict NO DECLAW policy, where adopters must agree to never declaw adopted cats. For more information on declawing and its alternatives, please visit
We have a lifetime commitment to our animals, all adopters must agree to return their pets to us if placement is not deemed successful.
We strongly encourage continued socialization and formal obedience training for all dogs under the age of eight.
If you have children younger than 5 years, and do not already have a canine in your home, understand that adding a dog or cat will be like adding a permanent 2 year old to your responsibilities. For this reason, we will only place our pets in homes with children younger than 5 on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind that completing an adoption contract means you understand that all adoption fees are non-refundable.
