My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet DAPPER

A totally awesome, 22 month old, AKC (no papers), 9lb mini, black and tan, silver and blue Dapple Doxie pup. This totally cute puppy is a brand new member of the Oregon Dachshund Rescue, Inc. puppy crew and is already gathering a following. DAPPER loves the outdoors and loves to play. He is just a fantastic fur-kid; friendly and loving. He will be a great pet for a patient, doxie savvy forever family with a stay at home parent (retired/work from home) and perhaps older kids (over age 12) who are familiar with the special needs of Dachshunds. DAPPER is a good eater, but a little underweight so he needs some home cooking to help him gain a couple of pounds. Like all Dachshunds, DAPPER is high energy and enjoys playing and warming his little bones in the sunshine, so along with regular walks around his neighborhood, DAPPER needs a secure fenced yard to run around and explore safely. He is also a hunter so a fenced yard is even more of a must. Dapper carries out a daily squirrel patrol and his foster parents describe his dedication to "catching his man" as impressive and heroic (he'll even try to climb the five foot fence). Since he is still so young and full of potential, he needs a loving family to make sure he receives his puppy education and patient one to one attention.

His foster family is already working on training and according to his foster mom, DAPPER is settling in well. He is very loving and likes to give kisses. There is no meanness, aggression, biting or growling. He has really bonded really well to his foster dad and his fur-siblings. He barks at squirrels and when he hears other dogs barking, but he doesn't bark when someone comes to the door. Like a lot of rescue doxies though, DAPPER can be a little timid and needs some reassurance and TLC. Some of the issues his foster family is working on with Dapper are his fearfulness/anxiety which comes out at times. He doesn't like being picked up if it's not his idea (He becomes very stiff). He loves to go outside, but he is afraid of the doggie door. He is not a fan of leashes yet. He doesn't understand basic commands and can be aloof at times...especially when on squirrel patrol. Finally, they are continuing to work on his potty training. The accidents may be related to his anxiety.

Overall, this is one wonderful little doxie who is getting a lot of love and care from his foster family to get him ready for his new, loving forever family. If this sounds like your family, please visit www.odr-inc.org and complete our Adoption Questionnaire right away. Puppies are adopted quickly.

Just a reminder that while small in stature, doxies are big on personality and don't generally do well in apartments, with all of the noises and traffic that come with multiple dwellings in a confined space. To best set up our doxies and their new families for success, ODR, Inc., adopt to families who live in single family homes with secure fenced yards.

OUR CRITERIA (aka The Fine Print):

Based on 30 years of experience with rescue doxies, we have pretty strict criteria. Do you work from home/stay at home/work part time? Have a securely fenced yard? We do not place same gender dogs in a home unless they were raised together, and children need to be 10 or older (some exceptions IF the dog is a puppy or the child has been raised with a doxie). We prefer non smokers and a home with no other small animals (ferrets, hamsters, etc) Cats are on a case by case basis depending on the dog. Remember, these are rescues; many were surrendered because of these issues.

WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN WITH YOUR LITTLE RESCUE:

All our dogs are fully vetted, including spay/neuter, rabies, DHPP, Bordetella, Pyrantyl, nails trimmed, and dental when needed. They'll come with a basket of goodies, food, toys and a custom made harness. The adoption fee is $395, sorry no exceptions, as this covers the cost to rescue them, vet them and take care of them while in our rescue. It also helps towards the care of other doxies that come with huge vet or dental bills or need extensive behavioral training.

Can you give DAPPER a happy, carefree life again? If interested, please complete the adoption questionnaire at www.odr-inc.org and email it to: jrangan@comcast.net. The adoption committee will attempt to be in contact with you within 48-72 hours. Please be patient as we are solely volunteer run.
