This sweetheart was picked up by animal control in horrible shape. She had clearly been chained for some time with very little human contact. Most of her teeth are missing and the ones she has are very worn down. She is in heat and had been attacked by another dog. She was ripped open in numerous places on her shoulders, her lower jaw was ripped; she was in incredible pain. She had every chance to be aggressive and bite, but instead like a pit bull she forgave us humans and graciously accepted the help. Her wounds had to be cleaned, flushed and then sown up. A big thanks to Dr. Ashley at Demopolis Animal Clinic to taking excellent care of her. Sadly, she is one of many that lives in these same conditions….“Why don't we stand up tall enough, yell loud enough and do our best to force ethical consciousness into our community. If you live in Marengo County and see this behavior or know of a family with a dog like her, REPORT THEM! Apathy is nearly as bad as the act itself.”
Today, this pitiful, broken, miserable, lost girl became ours. She will never wonder where her next meal is coming from. She will never stand alone in the yard, chained, hoping another dog doesn’t come and attack her because she doesn’t have enough teeth to defend herself. She will never not be loved again. She may never be adopted because she’s a “pitbull”, and that’s ok with us. Today, this girl became Adelaide, which means noble, and from this point forward all she will know is LOVE. We promised Adelaide the day she came in we would fight for her to make sure she had a better life. She is unfortunately heartworm positive. Sadly, the vet estimates she's only 2 years old...she's lived such a hard 2 years!! She will be spayed soon.
“We has rescued dogs from unimaginable scenarios with injuries that seem not to compute: gunshot wounds, stabbings, set on fire etc and so on. I am an optimist and generally think positively about us, our society and our potential, but examples like Adelaide here create a deep sadness in me. Countless elements of our culture desperately need to be changed—the abuse and torture of man’s best friend being a priority. Help us help our dogs by sharing their stories and standing up for animal’s rights— a dog’s right to be loved, fed and honored like the magnificent creatures they are.”

About Bigbee Humane Society

About Our Rescue Group...

Bigbee Humane Society serves as a safe haven for perfectly good adoptable dogs from city pounds in our area facing euthanasia. Until Bigbee Humane Society was formed large numbers of dogs picked up by our local animal controls were euthanized. We are a small rural rescue, with 50 outdoor kennels. We have 4 volunteers who work full time jobs and care for our dogs daily. We have no paid help. We are responsible for vetting, feeding, cleaning etc each dog daily.

Come Meet Our Pets...

We are located on City of Demopolis property on 809 E Jackson St Demopolis, AL. As stated, we are volunteer based so our hours vary. Please call before coming. We do try to have monthly adoption events at Tractor Supply in Demopolis. We also have a thrift store located on East Washingston Street in Demopolis that helps feed and vet our dogs.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption fee is $125, we do require a fenced in yard for their protection. An application is required to be completed before the adoption process can move toward. We do require a vet reference, and proof a heartworm prevention is given. We are a volunteer based organization, so if it takes us until the next day to respond to an email or return a phone call. Please be patient with us, we do the best we can.
