My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Heidi (left) and Hans (laying, right) are a pair of 6 year-old purebred Golden Retrievers who love each other and must stay together. They were adopted as puppies from the same litter and have lived happily in a home with their mommy and daddy all of their lives. One day a very sad thing happened; their mommy died and their world was turned upside down. The dogs had always been well-cared for and their daddy has been doing his best to carry on. But with his long work hours, they dogs are spending much too much time alone. They miss their Mom terribly and a mid-day dog walker just cannot provide what they need. Sorrowfully, their dad contacted SGRR to help find a new home for “the twins.”

When our volunteers meet Hans & Heidi, they were greeted with a first-class welcome! They told us, “The dogs were standing at the door, looking out through the storm door glass. Their tails were wagging happily, in typical Golden style. Once inside, it was clear that they relished the attention we were giving them. Hans kept bringing me the ball to toss for him or was rolling over for my husband to give him belly rubs. When I was sitting on the stairs to the 2nd level, Heidi was literally climbing up onto my lap, licking my face. Hans & Heidi exude all of the characteristics that make Golden Retrievers so well-loved. They are sweet, affectionate, smart, wonderful dogs!”

Their owner told us that from the time the dogs were puppies, he had always worked on being able to take any item away from “the twins,” be it food, toys, or bones, He made sure the pair did not develop any possessive traits. He felt that it might be a question of safety where he might, one day, need to remove an object from the dogs’ possession. Coincidentally, the day our volunteers visited, Hans had picked up something that workers in the home dropped on the floor and the owner took it from him without any problem.

Hans & Heidi will sit and wait for their treats and know basic commands like “sit,” “paw,” “up” (to go upstairs to sleep), “down.” They have been crate trained from puppyhood and stay in their crates, side by side, when no one is home. Their mommy & daddy had also taught the pair to walk on their leashes, one dog on the left and one on the right side. They love riding in the car and going to the park for walks. But currently, Hans & Heidi need to brush up their leash walking skills as they are just not getting out as much since their mommy went to heaven. “The twins” would do best with a fenced in yard where they could run and play. They do okay with other dogs, but Heidi is not keen on other females. She is clearly the alpha of the pair, with more energy and need for structure. Hans has a calmer demeanor and settles down more easily. He will lay down at your feet and roll over for a belly rub. He loves to play fetch and his owner told us he has a nice respect for boundaries. Should a ball roll under or behind something, Hans will sit and wait for his human to get it for him, never upsetting the apple cart. They have had no exposure to cats, but have a strong prey drive toward bunnies. They would be fine with children over the age of 10, but their exuberance might be too much for smaller children.

Handsome Hans is a light shade of golden with some distinguishing white on his face. Heidi’s fur has a reddish hue and she has just the beginnings of some white sugaring on her pretty face. This is a lovely pair of dogs who will flourish with exercise, structure, and affection. Hans and Heidi are up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and spayed and neutered. They are currently in NJ with their daddy while they await their forever home. Their mom’s wish was for her beloved dogs to be placed together. We pray we can honor her wish. If you can open your heart and home to a pair of wonderful dogs who want nothing more than to be the center of your world, and have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Donna to be considered to adopt Hans and Heidi.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
