My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi all! My name is Eddie. I’m a 6 year old male Chihuahua with white, short-hair and beautiful grey markings on my ears and face. I’m pretty small – I must say. I weigh just under 6 lbs which is actually considered ideal for my breed. Though I may be small, I am blessed with mountains of energy and sweet affection! I’m a good natured Chihuahua without any signs of aggression. Generally, I’m shy when meeting new faces or dogs for the first time, but this can be improved with socialization and training. I will be able to adapt to most situations with your patience and guidance – you will know just how happy I when I start to jump and twirl with glee! I may be tiny in size but I’m huge in personality!

Eddie came to his foster parents from a rural animal control facility shortly after his owner had passed away. Like all Chihuahua’s he is extremely dedicated to his people and will be a valued member of your family. In exchange for a loving home, you will be the centre of his universe. He forms everlasting bonds with those close to him and would do amazingly well in an environment that can give him lots of love and attention. Eddie is the perfect companion – whether it’s going for walks, a long distance drive, or simply cuddling together on a couch, munching popcorn and watching movies (his favourite activity); he’s content to be by your side no matter what.

Eddie is like most dogs and enjoys walks, chasing squirrels and guarding the house from intruders. He doesn’t need to be outside for extended periods of time, and is quite content to be inside when it is raining or cold outside. He is house trained and responds well when asked “need to go outside?!” when he needs to do his business. He’s also crate trained and will go in when he is at home alone or uncomfortable with new people around him. We suggest Eddie be put in his crate or a seat belt harness designed for tiny dogs when going for drives, as he become so excited to see what’s outside that it can become a distraction. When it’s time to go to sleep, Eddie is more than thrilled to snuggle in bed with you and burrow into the sheets. With rewarded behaviour, he can be trained to sleep in his own bed but he would prefer to snuggle in with you.

When it comes to grooming this little fella, it’s a breeze! He responds so well to nail trimmings and brushing. He hardly sheds because of his size and flat coat. He does become a bit squirmy when you try to give him a bath, but he loves the attention he receives when he is being towel dried afterwards and let loose to roll and play around on the carpet or in the grass.

Dental care is a must for Eddie as Chihuahua’s are known for bad teeth. Sometimes he can be a picky eater and does best with a mix of dry and wet food. His favourite treats are cheese and small pieces of carrot. We found he is not typically interested in small, dry treats. It is best to give him small portions throughout the day or when commanding him to sit or lay down.

Eddie would do very well in a home or apartment with mature adults where there are not any small children. Sudden actions and movements make Eddie very timid and frightened. We have noticed Eddie gets along quite well with other Chihuahuas and would be a good fit in a home with a Chihuahua or another small dog. He needs to belong in a home where he will not be allowed to roam free and get lost, and where he can be confident in the fact that he is home forever.

Even though he is as tiny as can be it is very important for Eddie to go to a family that understands that obedience school is a valuable tool regardless of size of dog and will be needed for him. Eddie will bond faster with his new people through obedience work, and it is going to be invaluable to him in regards to socialization and confidence. Chihuahua’s are very intelligent little dogs and are capable of learning anything you are wanting to teach them. Although it appears that Eddie was greatly loved by his previous owner it is apparent that they didn’t expose him to too many things or socialize him well so we are looking for a home for him this time around that will put the time and effort in to taking him to school, getting him out and seeing the world on walks and trips, and will introduce him to people in a calm and patient manner. Eddie is very loving and friendly, he just needs more exposure to people to not be shy around strangers. We are also looking for a family that understands that Eddie must be treated like a dog, not an accessory, and needs to walk on his own 4 feet and be confident when down on the ground. It is very tempting to want to pick up and carry a teeny dog like Eddie but lots of carrying him around is detrimental to his confidence. He needs to have rules, discipline, exercise and love like any other breed of dog to live his best life. Eddie is such a lovely natured Chihuahua that we want him to stay that way. His foster home is doing an excellent job taking him out and showing him the world and he has come a long way so far. He will only continue to blossom in his forever home with a family that will incorporate the “treat him like a dog, not a toy” attitude. Eddie is a true gem of a dog and we know he will be a devoted and loving companion for a very lucky person, couple, or family.
