Facts about Niko

  • Breed: German Shepherd Dog
  • Color: Tan/Yellow/Fawn - With Black
  • Age: Senior
  • Size: X-Large 101 lbs (46 kg) or more
  • Sex: Male
Niko is 9 1/2 yrs old and weighs 110lbs. He is a sweet dog. His family gave him up when their 1 yr old child was giving Niko a hard time. We love him and his spirit. He loves to trot around in the fenced in areas with a few of the other guys and will lay at your feet quietly, too. He sits for biscuits and is crate trained. He has had obedience training in the past. He loves attention and petting.

He has suffered with painful ear infections and does not like to have his ears cleaned and treated but we are working on getting that fixed and getting him to trust that we are helping him and that ear cleaning is a good thing. He was previously eating a very low grade kibble full of dyes and corn and I believe that added to or was the cause of these ear infections. We have him on a really good food now and have already seen an improvement in his coat and his ears.

Niko would love to have a home of his own again with a fenced in yard. He gets excited on leash so we're working on that, too. We'd love to see him in a home with another large dog for company and with someone that is home a lot.

About Mureille's Place - A Senior Dog Sanctuary

About Our Rescue Group...

Mureille’s Place is a small home-based 501c3 rescue. We are a cage-free no-kill facility that provides a safe haven for unwanted senior dogs until they can be adopted into a forever home or if unadoptable, live out their remaining days with love, dignity and respect. The sanctuary is located on 7 wooded acres that include several walking trails that the dogs enjoy year round. We are very proud that we are an all volunteer rescue and do not have any paid staff or board members and that all tax deductible donations go to the rescue operation.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Visits to the shelter are by appointment only. Please call Barbara at 570-579-8172 to arrange.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adoption process includes a pre-adoption interview to determine the type of home you will provide and will aid us in finding the right dog for you. We prefer that the dog do a “weekend” visit or longer before adopting to ensure that both the adopter and the dog are sure that it is a good match. There is an application to be filled out, a home visit and adoption donation typically from $50 - $150 (non-refundable). All dogs are spayed or neutered and are up to date on all shots.

We have also launched our "Seniors for Seniors" program where we do not charge a fee at all to qualifying senior citizens who adopt one of our seniors.

We are also working on a program that would allow a senior to adopt one of our seniors and we would take care of food, vet visits etc and be a place for the dog to come back to if the adopter had health issues and needed to be hospitalized or worse, passed away and there were no family members to take the dog in. This would greatly benefit seniors on a fixed income who want to own a dog but can't provide for them or are afraid that they will not outlive the dog. We are searching for funding for this program and will launch it as soon as that funding is found.
