My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Luke came to Safe Hands in June from a high kill shelter in Kentucky. He entered the Kentucky shelter after he was presumably hit by a car in which he sustained a broken leg and few other minor injuries. Since he has arrived in Minnesota and under the loving care of veterinarians, foster parents and rescue volunteers, he's fully recovered and ready for adoption into his forever home.

Luke is about 1 year old and weighs about 60 lbs. He's an energetic puppy looking for a family that can match his exuberance and zest for life through walks, hikes, playing in the yard and games. He's fully potty trained and does really well with standard routine. Luke does really well in his crate while his foster parents are at work and loves his walks, especially with his Gentle Leader. Formal positive reinforcement training will help him (and his human companions) enjoy their walks even more. Luke has been a great little foster brother to his older foster pup sister and brother. He's learned boundaries and knowing when they want to play and when they don't. He loves to play with other pups and will be a great playmate for others who are well socialized and polite.

Luke sleeps through the night on a bed next to his humans' bed. He rarely gets them up in the middle of the night, but occasionally does if he has to go to the bathroom. Because he's still a "teenager", he will need to be enrolled in training courses in order to continue developing his manners and commands. He also will continue to need socialization by being around other dogs and new experiences. Luke would absolutely love a family with a fully fenced in yard. His current foster home has one and the transition to his new home will be much more fun with it. Also, a family with another well-mannered and polite pup for Luke to play with would be ideal. Luke's new family must be willing to enroll him in training classes. He's such a loving and energetic pup that, with training and socialization, he will be even more lovable and sweet. There is no doubt that he will make an exceptional member of a family. The family that welcomes him into their home will be truly lucky. Since we don't know at all what doggy genes are in the dogs make up (we don't know who mom and dad are!), we are just guessing on breed.

All dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. They have all had a vet exam, are up to date on vaccinations, have been given a dewormer, are treated for fleas, have a heartworm test if over 6 months old and are up to date on a heartworm preventative.

Please note that because we require a home visit at the time of adoption we can only place animals in homes within a 60 mile radius of Minneapolis. If you are interested in meeting this dog please fill out the pre-adoption application on our website at http://www.safehandsrescue.org under Adopt and we will get back to you to arrange a meeting in the foster home.

We also have an Adoptable Dog Meet & Greet on Saturday November 14, 2015, at Fetch Delivers Warehouse, 783 Harding St. NE. Suite 150, Minneapolis, MN 55413, from noon - 2 pm. Occasionally dogs cannot make it to the Meet & Greet, therefore feel free to verify if your dog of interest is able to attend. Please bring a copy of your pre-adoption application.
