My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Monkey is a charming, witty, funny 3 lb, 10 yr old little guy who like most Yorkies knows what he wants. His original owners decided after 10 yrs that they had no time for him, so they dumped him in a high kill city shelter. He was adopted quickly but returned 1-1/2 days later. The person who adopted him said he was returned because he peed in the house.

Generally when a dog is returned to a shelter, things do not turn out very well for that dog. However, in this case, lucky for him that he was returned as one of our volunteers happened to be there and snatched him up. It was quickly noticed that on the whole when he went to urinate, only 2 or 3 drops came out. He was taken to the vet and after having an x-ray, it was discovered that poor Monkey had a large stone in his bladder and one in his little urethra. He had emergency surgery and we were told that he probably would have died within 3 days if we hadn't caught it when we did.

Both of his back legs have had luxating patellas, but because he went into cardiac arrest during his bladder surgery, he cannot go under anesthesia again to fix his patellas.

He is now fully recovered from his surgery and is bouncing around, his Foster Mom says that sometimes she can hardly keep up with Monkey as he moves so fast! He will have to be on a special diet for the remainder of his life and it is advised that he be given good vitamin supplements for his luxating patellas.

He gets along with other dogs, cats and people. Monkey loves going for walks and for such a tiny one, he is fearless! As we discovered from his surgery, he is indeed a fighter. Because of his delicate physique, a home with no young children would be preferred. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots and micro chipped.

If you are interested in Monkey, please complete the on-line application as he does not always attend the weekly adoption events on Saturdays at PETCO. You can also contact us for more information at: www.adoptmerescue@gmail.org.
