My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

12/7/15 Foster Update - I really really love this dog. Puck is just one of a kind who does not come along very often. I surely see why our volunteer, Lisa, so adored him.

Today, I started to teach him how to stay, by using the one thing he most loves: the ball. I throw it, he catches and fetches. Then, remembering the training technique ---- no rewards without some work ---- I put him in a sit position which he knows, give the "stay" command, and walk away. It took numerous repetitions, but he got it finally that the only way I would throw the ball again was if he sat and stayed and waited.

We got the answer to the question of how does Puck does with cats when he met my son's cats today. He barked at and stared down my son's cats and tried to grab one who hissed at him and tried to climb up the cat scratching tree to get another. No matter what, no cats in his future!! On the other hand, he played for two hours with their dog who is now in love with him and he is unbelievable with our young grandsons.

12/2/15 Update from Puck's Foster Dad: Puck is one of the most delightful dogs I have ever encountered. The right family will be thrilled beyond words with him! He is affectionate, playful, energetic, mischievous, smart, and handsome. His beautiful coat is shiny and soft, and you will love petting and hugging him as much as he loves being petted and hugged. Puck is the perfect name for this funny guy who will charm you with his antics. Shadow would also be a good name, as he will follow you everywhere, usually with a ball in his mouth and a request to play catch. Puck will catch a ball midair, like a circus animal, retrieve and drop it in front of you, and wait to start again. He seems to like all toys, especially pull toys and cuddly ones. He may be 2-3 years old, but he still has a lot of puppy in him. With bursts of high energy, he is like a toddler who will thrive in an environment with lots of playtime and full attention. He is fabulous with children, even our rambunctious 3 and 5 year-old grandsons, who adore him. Puck absolutely loves all people. He quickly bonds, and seeks affection. He is a hugger and a kisser, and just wants to be with us wherever we go. Like a Golden, cuddles right into one's space and then tries to get closer. He thinks he's a lap dog, and twice proved it by jumping into my lap and kissing me.

Puck needs to know who's boss though, because through his incredible charm and high intelligence he can take over and misbehave. But he wants to please you, above all, and I assure you he will. Since being in foster care for less just a few weeks, he has improved on leash walking (almost a solid "B" now). He is fully house-broken and will let us know when he needs to do his "business." Puck has invented games with us - he will kick the ball down the stairs, I retrieve it, run back up, and we start again. He has let us know he probably belonged to someone with a flatbed truck, because each morning he jumped up on the hood of the car, as if saying "let's go!" He loves riding in cars and settles in the back seat quite easily. Puck has charmed the entire neighborhood, all of who think we are crazy not to adopt him. How we wish we could!! This dog deserves the very best. He will be your best buddy and loyal companion for life!

Puck's Story: Puck is a BEAUTIFUL "black golden" boy who is estimated to be about 3 years old. He was picked up as a stray in Mobile County, AL, and sadly no one came to claim this happy boy. As fate would have it, Puck came to our rescue on the day that is considered to be National Black Dog Day. This was truly Puck’s lucky day because he is now on his way to finding a forever home where he will be loved and cherished. Puck had an adoption pending, but the resident dog was hurt in an accident and the family feels this is not the time to bring another dog to their home.

Puck is good with other dogs, but has not been tested with cats. He is described as "sweet and playful." He greets our volunteers at the kennel with a happy tail wag. He loves to be petted, and with his sleek and lustrous black coat, you will never want to stop petting him. His photos do not do him justice – trust us when we say this boy is stunning! Puck's smile lights up a room and he looks like he is wearing a tuxedo with the white blaze on his chest. He would be a delightful walking or jogging buddy, happy to start the day with an early morning jaunt to take in all the wonderful scents that dogs like to sniff.

One of our volunteers in AL went to spend some time with Puck recently. She told us, "He is a big ole' puppy in the way he acts! He is a real licker, so prepare to be showered with doggy kisses! He jumps up lightly as he tries to lick your face, but when you tell him "no" or "down," he will stop jumping. He is VERY affectionate and soaks up attention. He is an incredibly pretty boy and his smile is amazing. He loves to be petted and is just a doll of a dog." Lisa went on to say, "Puck acts like a young, goofy Golden in black fur. He takes treats gently and has a soft mouth." He keeps his kennel clean, and when she took him out, he peed for a long time, indicating that he had "held it" for quite a while. Puck shows no signs of abuse in the past, and is trusting and loving. He got a C+/B- on leash skills so that is one small area that could use some improvement. All-in-all, this is one AWESOME dog!

Puck weighs in at 62 lbs and has been neutered, brought up-to-date on vaccinations, and micro-chipped. He has completed treatment for heartworm at one of our vet's office in AL and is now ready to come north on 11/21/15. Puck is a real favorite of our volunteers in the south. Don't miss out on this incredible boy!

Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note we begin getting inquiries about them the minute we publish their pictures on our site! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
