Polaris is a 3yr old Akita mix. He was found tied to a stop sign with a friend and taken to a high kill shelter. Their previous owners were found but didn't want the dogs back and officially surrendered them. His buddy was adopted right away but the shelter didn't feel poor Polaris was good enough to put on the adoption floor so slated him for euthanasia or rescue pull only. We pulled him to get him Veterinary care and he is now living in a foster home and doing great. He is potty trained and very loving. He takes a little time to warm to strangers. He would like to be invisible when sniffing and greeting new people. Then when he's comfortable, he's ready to interact with new friends. He does well with all his foster brothers and sisters. But prefers low energy, non dominant dogs. He has not been around cats, but did well giving space to the chickens at his foster home. Due to his initial fear of strangers, we would recommend him only to a home with older children. He has a few health issues, but they have not slowed him down. 2 years ago, with his previous owner, he had an autoimmune flare up that effects the muscles in his face/jaw. He is not on medication for this now but if it were to flare up again he would need a low dose of steroids to put it back under control which is a very inexpensive medication. He also has hip dysplasia, but at this time it appears his body has adjusted and allows him to live comfortably and pain free with this issue. Given a diet that supports joints and keeps inflammation low should help keep his hip issue and any further autoimmune issues at bay. However there is always a possibility that he could need surgery on his hips in the future. This was still no reason for this sweet boy to lose his life. He has so many wonderful years left to give to a family. Polaris is a sweet boy and lives to please his family. He enjoys being his human's right hand man and deserves a family as loyal as he is.
