We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable young dog. Ivory is the kind of pup who snuggles in, loves you up and then puts her head on your shoulder. She's so sweet and kind with every possibility open to her. That's the case unless a dog is in a high-kill shelter that quickly runs out of space. We're so grateful for the efforts of our great rescuer in Tijuana, Mexico for saving Ivory from euthanasia. She could see that her temperament was so sweet and her need so great that she couldn't turn her back on this very special girl. Ivory was immediately brought to be vetted, given the appropriate vaccinations, spayed, granted a health certificate and brought to a dog-loving foster to begin her education as a treasured house dog.
When we think of rescue, our thoughts don't usually go onto the tough streets of Tijuana. But these forgotten dogs deserve our help every bit as much as their US counterparts. They all have been used for opportunistic purposes...to either breed and discard or to sell as a puppy to a Mexican mill or rich tourists. Virtually all of them have lived on the streets and survived by learning to be social. They love people because compassionate tourists were their means of survival. They can sit in any language and fit quietly into any scene to earn a treat or discarded meal.
This was the life waiting for Ivory...just 9 - 12 months old and approximately 8 lbs (such a perfect size to be able accompany her family just about anywhere) and already starting to understand that sweet, cuddly and cooperative behavior gets great things in life. Ivory was one of the extremely lucky young dogs to master her socialization skills at a very early age and endear herself to the US rescuers. There was no way Ivory could be left behind...we all had a clear picture of this sweet girl in a forever Colorado home with a family that cherishes her for life.
As Ivory becomes comfortable in her home, she will become a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please - the happier her family is with her behavior, the more she will shine with her accomplishments. We would like to see Ivory in a home that includes her in family time and activities (and some lap-time would be perfect!)... and takes that extra step to participate in positive reinforcement obedience classes. These classes take a very smart dog like Ivory and molds them into a great family member that can behave appropriately in any situation. Ivory would also be a wonderful companion for active retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a truly adorable young girl. Ivory would enjoy another very gentle dog to play with...she's so sweet and gentle as she puts her positive energy into enjoying the day with a fun friend.
Ivory was identified as a Poodle/Maltese mix by her Tijuana rescuer (sorry about the awful photo..Ivory is actually very beautiful) She is a shed-free dog (one of the best mixes for those with allergy challenges) and will therefore require periodic grooming and great nutrition (a salmon oil supplement would be great) to keep her cotton-soft hair healthy and matt-free.
Ivory is arriving on transport in Boulder in mid November. Applications are currently being accepted for our sweet girl with the dark, expressive eyes and kind smile.
