Facts about Branford and Ellie

  • Breed: Chicken
  • Color: Brown
  • Age: Adult
  • Sex: Male
Brandford and Ellie are a dynamic duo who adore each other's companionship. Branford was found wandering the grounds of a local nursing home where maintenance workers chased him with a shovel. This shy fellow was luckily caught and found refuge at CAS in July 2014. He is a handsome boy, but a bit of a scaredy cat. We think he is a Cornish or Chanticleer cross.
In an effort to get Branford out of his shell, we introduced him to Ellie when she came to CAS in December 2014. It was love at first sight. Ellie is really a personable gal, who jumps for grapes and enjoys perching on your arm while getting some affection.

They are a friendly and talkative pair who spend their days scratching in the dirt and frolicking in the tall grasses. Branford and Ellie would get along well with other hens, but he would likely get picked on by another rooster.

Are you looking to start your own backyard flock? Or seeking a dashing fellow with his lady fair to add some interest to your existing flock?

About Catskill Animal Sanctuary

About Our Rescue Group...

Located in the New York’s Hudson Valley, Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS) is a 110-acre haven for horses and farm animals rescued from cruelty and neglect. In addition to emergency rescue, CAS provides innovative programs that educate the public about the sentience of farm animals, and the devastating impacts of agribusiness and institutionalized cruelty on animals, people, and the planet.

CAS offers weekend and special group tours, vegan cooking classes, speaking engagements, a summer day camp for kids, and a host of compassionate programming year round at its primarily solar-powered Sanctuary. Lodging is available on site at The Homestead, a beautifully-renovated 1813 farmhouse.

Since 2001, CAS has rescued over 3,500 animals, and has worked in tandem with law enforcement to bring animal abusers to justice.

Our Adoption Process...

We ask all adopters to complete an adoption application, specific to the species they intend to adopt. These can be found on our website at casanctuary.org. We then set up a meeting between adopter and animal to see if the two are compatible. We require a site visit to see where the animal will be living prior to approving an adoption. Things we look for include type and condition of fencing, size and condition of pasture, shelter- run in/shed/barn/stall, availability of food and water, type of bedding to be used. We ask for 2 references for all adopters. There is also an adoption fee for all animals which varies by species ranging from $15-$500.
