My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATE, ADOPTION PENDING!
Shila is a sweet senior beagle who was abandoned by her owners at a Houston area animal control shelter, and due to her age and condition she would have been doomed. However, a beagle rescue volunteer went to the shelter to rescue her. She had apparently been neglected for a long time, with 2 cherry eyes, 2 mammary tumors, a hernia, nails so long they were curled back into her paws, and she was 8 lbs. overweight. You can see her transformation by comparing her pitiful shelter photo with her "after" view!

The staff at the vet clinic who took care of Shila reported that she was a wonderful patient -- always cheerful, cooperative, friendly -- such a good girl! Her foster parents agree. She has been one of the best beagle fosters at their home, and there have been many! Shila apparently has never heard the expression that old dogs can't learn new tricks, because she is always willing to try anything! She loves going on a lively walk, enjoys riding in the car even though that seemed to be new for her, learned to use a doggie door very quickly, and always likes visiting new places! She is not happy when the humans go away without her and will make a bit of noise at first, and then again when you return, so an apartment setting would not be a good fit for her adoption.

The vet clinic guessed her age at approx. 8 or 9 years. She is 14" tall and weighed 33 lbs. on intake but should weigh about 25, so we are working on that! The tissue from the tumors was sent out to a laboratory for testing, and the report came back saying both growths were malignant but were a type that has a very low (15%) incidence of reccurance, and had been successfully removed beyond their margins. We also took x-rays and sent those to a radiologist to be sure that nothing else was hiding and that test came back well, too. Shila tested heartworm negative, and she breezed through all the surgical procedures without missing a beat, so she is otherwise a healthy beagle and does not seem like a senior dog. Her lovely, shiny black coat and her happy, energetic personality certainly give her a young-at-heart appearance.

Shi gets along with the other senior beagles in the household, and she recently became acquainted with a huge German Shepherd who was visiting the foster family, so she would not mind sharing space with another dog, or she could be happy as an only dog too. She wags her tail enthusiastically upon meeting anyone new. In fact, she wags her tail so much that it was difficult to get a photo of her where the tail was not a blur! She really enjoyed putting on different doggie clothing for her photo shoot, so it was hard to choose just a few photos out of the many cute ones. Email us to see more photos!
