My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Poncho and I am a 30 year old Yellow Nape Amazon. It was believed I was a pretty testy bird, but it turned out I just had a lot of medical issues that needed to be treated. I came into rescue in a round, very small, rusted cage. I also had several busted air sacs, one over my eye, in which I am now blind from an old injury. My nails were also so long and curled under that I could barely perch and would fall often. I also could not open and close one of my wings properly. I had been on a diet of peanuts and seeds with no outside time for sunlight for many, many years. Florida Parrot Rescue got me straight to the veterinarian and I had a full physical with bloodwork and x-rays. It turns out that I have arthritis in my spine and in my right foot from being in too small of a cage with no exercise, which is also why I hold one of my wings funny. They made sure my nails were clipped, but my wings can’t be clipped due to my arthritis. My air sacs were also drained, but those issues will be permanent and draining will need to be done from time to time. In addition, I will probably also be on pain medication for the rest of my life, so I am a special needs bird – but Florida Parrot Rescue says I am worth it and that they will find the right person for me who understands this! I also have very scaly, dry feet and terrible feather condition from no sunlight exposure for so long, so my foster Mom is going to make sure that I now get switched to a brand new diet with lots of time outside for sun (in a safe way, of course!). I LOVE chop, kale, bananas, and sweet potatoes – those are my favorites so far! And I am also getting used to Harrisons pellets. I am also starting to learn how to play with toys and it turns out that I have a very large vocabulary! I really hope that someone comes to meet me very soon and decides to make me a permanent part of their loving family! In the meantime, I could really use a few things that would make me comfortable, like a new cage with a playstand, some soft perches for my feet, and some new toys and treats. If you would like to send me a gift, please see my wishlist at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/1DID5TVP64TL3/ref=cm_wl_list_o_159? Thank you!
