Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Stevie is a lovely male kitten who is blind. We are guessing his birthdate is in the first week of August 2015. He was born into a feral colony on a farm, and was one of a litter of five, all of his siblings being orange tabbies. Stevie is a long-haired cat, and although his coat started as solid black, it has been developing a very distinctive black smoke colour. Stevie has been neutered and vaccinated.
Stevie had his eyes removed when he was nearly three months old as a result of a combination of glaucoma and infection. Other than the eyes, he has been very healthy. His personality is amazing. He is both fun and funny, and outgoing. Although he had to be in screaming pain for most of his life, he never stopped purring and playing. After his eye surgery, he came out of the anaesthetic and immediately started to play with the vet techs.
Stevie loves to explore on his own and does not need anyone to move him to a new space - he can find his way just fine. He jumps and plays just like a cat who can see. Until he knows the distance, he backs down off the couch or chair, but when he figures out the distance he will just jump. A paper bag is a great adventure for him (see video), and he loves to play with his ball as well. Stevie’s littermate, who is also up for adoption, is a good buddy to him, if anyone would be interested in the pair together.
Stevie will be able to lead an almost completely normal life, but he will need to be strictly indoor-only. He will need a fairly static environment - a home without clutter and that has furniture and things that are not moved around a lot. He will learn every inch of his new home and then will never bump into anything -- if nothing moves. He gets along well with the other kittens, cats, and dogs in his foster home. It would be nice if he could have an animal friend to enrich his life in his adoptive home, but we don't want his adoptive home to have very playful dogs or aggressive cats because of Stevie's obvious disadvantage. A suitable adoptive home will not have family members younger than teenagers.
It would be best if he could go to someone with experience with blind cats, but a motivated person could certainly learn how to care for him. His adoption will be subject to a $225 fee and a home visit. Please contact us at mbruce8@shaw.ca if you are interested in Stevie and tell us about yourself and the life you envision for him.
